Resort to go co-ed in January

The new owners of a Fleming Street guesthouse complex are embracing the island's One Human Family philosophy -- and doubling their potential client base -- by ending the long-established "no girls allowed" policy come January.

As of Jan. 6, Oasis and Coconut Grove guesthouses will welcome gay and straight men and women to the resort's 36 guest rooms in five buil...

"Resort to go co-ed in January"

Once again an article (Just like the response to the endorsement of Mitt Romney") that shows how two faced certain Key West groups are in their befiefs. Say one thing, do another. The gay community that demands equality in so many ways PROHIBITS other groups from their guesthouses and just expects the rest of us to accept it. What a joke.

Yankees

Like it or not, this island was founded by Yankees, even the first Bahamians here were originally New England whalers.Any prosperity this island had came from Yankees. In fact name me one prosperous southern city that wasnt' founded by Yankees. Whitehead,Yankee,Simonton,Yankee,Flagler,Yankee. You Cubans and Rednecks should thank us for letting you live here.

Yankees

William Curry, who is often called Florida's first millionaire was not a Yankee. His family emigrated from Scottland to the Carolinas. Check your history.

One step closer to Key Anywhere

Another Gay guesthouse bought by an Out of Town company as we become less and less of a "Gay" destination. I guess this is good in a way. At least there will be fewer people to bash and beat up on Duval Street. Slowly but surely, everything alternative or quirky about Key West is being replaced with mainstream tourism. One day, when the funky, originality is gone, the tourists will look around, see our dead reef, see our dirty beaches, feel our chilly winter weather, and wonder what they came here for. I guess there will always be massive cruise ships and low end drunks we can cater to. If you doubt this change is happening, go to Upper Duval. This used to be an area with some class. Now, there is a Fury rental booth on every corner with touts yelling as you walk, and the former Valderes, Joy Gallary, and Fletcher Furniture and now all filled with the same cheap tee shirt and low end clothes offered at 3 for $3.99. Pretty sad if you ask me.

stay in business

They most likely want to be able to double there clientele, so they can pay the mortgage and keep the place open and paying there employees.

I think they should

I think they should reconsider. "Gay" tourism is much more profitable than attracting other tourism. They have more disposable income and on average tend to have higher incomes as well. Studies have shown this. Where other places are thinking of ways to attract more "gays" we take for granted that we are a "gay" island and just no longer concentrate on the true breed and butter. There is no way that the texas tuesday cruise ships bring in as much money as pride week, per se. As far as us Yankees destroying the island, most of the gay bashers have been Conchs, so who is really destroying the island, greedy ignorant conchs, or accepting, sharing yankees?

Can someone explain to me

Can someone explain to me why an all male guest house is just fine, but an all male golf club drives the New York Times, among others, nuts? Perhaps it's because if you're a "made member" of One Human Family, blatant discrimination is somehow OK?

Doh

All those changes you're whining about have already happened .... thanks to you "Yankees".

Stupid is as stupid does

My dear Conch Bad Dog, it would behoove you to remember that every business transaction has 2 people involved. It is The Conchs who sold Key West to the highest bidder. Conch royalty like HRH Swift and Spottswood are the ones behind most of the commercialization both past and present. Wait for the conference center and casino the Spottswoods have brewing. last I checked, these people are not Yankees. Regardless of who you want to blame, the changes are real and accelerating, and The Conchs do nothing to prevent it. It is always those damn Yankees trying to prevent another 1000 scooter licenses or huge hotels with no employee parking. I know it is a very Southern thing to vote against your own interests and to blame others for your troubles, but get over it and do something about it if you care.
