New cruise ship docks in January
Carnival ship among largest to dock in city, with room for 3,700 passengers

Carnival Cruise Lines this week announced details of its newest -- and largest -- passenger ship ever home-ported in South Florida, complete with a port of call scheduled for January in Key West.

At 15 decks tall, the Breeze this weekend begins six-day Caribbean cruises that start from Miami, dock one day in Key West and then take off for Grand Turk and then the Bahamas,...

a Girl who can't say "no"

Well my goodness! I didn't mean to ruffle so many feathers. I'm feeling a bit J. Alfred Prufrock-ish here. "That's not it at all. That's not what I meant at all." Firstly, I have never posted on this board before, so I don't know where someone who doesn't even know me would get the idea that I have a fixation on the victimization of women. Rabbi Flanagan referred to Key West as "a girl who can't say no". I simply carried through with his analogy and suggested that the blame belongs to the few greedy individuals who are despoiling the island and reducing the quality of life for the rest of us. With regard to my nickname, "Mammy Yokum", it has nothing to do with the post. I just happen to like her. She was a strong, outspoken woman...the unofficial Mayor of Dogpatch...and Al Capp's favorite Dogpatch character. "The Dukes of Hazard" was a dumbed down, sexed up piece of fluff that lacked any of the wit and political subtext of "Li'l Abner". Ah haz spoken.

Go back to Dogpatch!

Mammy Yokum should go back to Dogpatch.

Despite her fixation, not everything in the world has to do with the victimization of women.

Another Big Ship

Oh No!!!! Now we won't be able to view the beautiful Key West sunsets on the web cams. The're blocking our view.

A girl who can't say no

While I agree with the Rabbi that Key West is "in a turrible fix", holding her responsible is sort of like blaming the victim. I'm sure she'd say "no" to a lot of things that have been perpetrated upon her if only she could. Blame the thugs that kidnapped and raped her decades ago and are still pimping her out for their own personal gain.

Dogpatch ain't in Oklahoma!

I think Mammy Yokum needs a geography lesson.

While she's at it, perhaps she should get some "skoolin" on how sexist and politically incorrect "Li'l Abner" is. It was the ispiration for "Dukes of Hazzard" -- Daisy Dukes was plagiarized from the original "Daisy Mae" character, whose most famous line in that musical was, "My aim in life is to be a good wife."

Hype

There's a bit of size sensationalism here because Breeze is the same exact size as Carnival Magic, which already comes here. But either way, the last thing this small town needs is another over sized Trailer Park of the Seas on our docks. It would be nice to see more of the nicer and smaller ships instead of these trashy Carnival party barges.

So Much for Needing to Widen the Channel

Obviously if this monstrosity can make it into port, so can the rest of them.

Herd

Wonderful. Another herd of marks for the $5 stores, Fury and Historic Tours of America. Maybe we could start a movement to fill in the channel instead of widening it.

FITTON MUST BE FIRED

This is outrageous-- for Commissioner Mark Rossi and City Port Director Jim Fitton to thumb their noses at the citizenry and the city commission is completely unacceptable. Both know clearly that public opinion is overwhelmingly against larger cruise ships and yet they persist in inviting them to our port.

We can't do anything about Rossi until his term is up (though he's clearly violating Ethics in Government rules). But we can sure as hell demand that Fitton be fired immediately for scheduling this monster cruise ship without advise and consent of the city commission. That's the reason we let former city manager Jim Scholl go. And if the new city manager isn't careful, he'll go the same route.

Our commissioners need to put this item on the next agenda and disapprove this monster ship visiting our port!

Key West "just a gal who can't say 'No'"

It looks like we're going to get bigger ships, whether we say "NO" to channel-widening, or not.

Well, well, well......

I'd say that this article.....ends the argument over widening the channel.... "in one fell swoop"....wouldn't you???
