Reading a recent Sports Illustrated, I became entranced with an excerpt from Frank Deford's new book, "Over Time: My Life as a Sportswriter."

The excerpt was about the early days and people of the NBA. As I read it, I thought, I knew many of those people. I bet Frank and I could have a great time trading stories on the birth of pro basketball. We're even about the same age.<...
