Historic Bahama Village gym in disrepair
Commission considers costly repairs

At age 10, Elijah Jefferson has a killer jump shot.

It starts at the top of the key on the court inside the Frederick Douglass Gym in Key West's Bahama Village neighborhood, and ends with nothing but net.

Jefferson, and his 7-year-old cousin Javan Scott, shot some hoops Friday afternoon after finishing up the school day at Poinciana Elementary.

She could have been more demanding

At least she didn't ask Key West taxpayers to build it in the middle of Sugarloaf.

Tear it down

How about we tear it down and rebuild it in the middle of the city so all of the residents of Key West can equal access to the amenities... That way no one will be seperated and everyone will be equal.....

No offense, but...

Does Big Pine Chick pay Key West taxes?

Which Key West residents does she speak for... those who live in Big Pine who would rather have a free gym to visit in the middle of Key West?

Use of Pier House funds has rational connection...

The Pier House was originally redeveloped with Federal Community Developement Block Grants which were received because it was supposed to provide employment opportunity to minorities of the "blighted" Bahama Village. How did that work out?

Similarly, the Caroline Street Tax Increment district was created in combination with the Bahama Village TIFF, because after the Bight's original needs were addressed, funds were supposed to flow to the less affluent BV district in order to correct deficiencies there. This transfer of benefit provided the rationale to permit the Caroline Corridor. How did that work out?

The city exploits the "blighted" status of BV to justify funding schemes to benefit other areas of the city -- the same way other cities have done across the nation. Don't expect much change in Key West, or the Bahama Village.
