Key West puts a legal hold on pain clinics
Law buys city 6 months to craft zoning laws

Key West has installed a legal remedy to ward off a pain management clinics that want to set up shop on the island until zoning regulations can be passed to strictly regulate the industry here.

The City Commission unanimously decided last week to invoke the Zoning in Progress doctrine and direct the planning department to defer any applications for permits from anyone intere...

There has to be a happy medium

I agree with many of the comments here, however, try having chronic kidney stones and not being able to get pain medication b/c the pharmacies and/or pharmacists either say they don't have the medication in stock or they put you through an inquisition to get them filled. Then if you try a different phamarcy than normal b/c of your regular pharmacy not having them in stock, they turn you away just assuming you've been doctor shopping or trying to do something shady. It's ridiculous. If I come to you with the SAME prescription from the SAME doctor, then DUH!!! Not everybody is a pill addict! If you've ever had a kidney stone you know the pain that it is; and if you haven't, don't say a word - it IS THE MOST excruciating pain in the world. There are just some pains that cannot be treated with ibuprofin or acetominophen.

pain management

Most drugs used for pain management fall into the opiate category; either derived from opium directly or synthetically manufactured by pharmaceutical companies. All of these drugs are some of the most addicting substances known, have a plethora of side effects, and eventually cease to work after a period of time and addiction is what remains. Sadly, this is the case with many pharmaceutical preparations. Also, opiates do not take the pain away, they merely change the way you experience it. Current research finds that medical marijuana works much the same way and is one of the very few substances that carry no addictive properties i.e. there is no tolerance, physical dependence, and very few even develop a psychological dependence. The only so-called "side effect" is the euphoria, that many would argue is really a desired effect! This is in stark contrast to pharmaceutical preparations. Yet the propaganda machine continues to spew its false premises perpetuated by pharmaceutical companies and the alcoholic beverage industry who do not want competition. Also, it makes for good politics for those running for elected office so they can continue to argue for a "war on drugs" which was a preposterous notion to begin with... but Americans do love their wars. Oh, and a large percentage of people in this country that are incarcerated are people of color convicted of drug charges, many of which are marijuana convictions. That's right, here in the land of the free we incarcerate way more people than any other country in the world, many of which are for the use of drugs not prescribed by a doctor. Don't you think it is time to repeal the prohibition on marijuana and allow people the freedom of choice in their treatment?

Good and Bad

While it's good that the City Commissioners are worried about Pain Clinics selling drugs to people that don't need them it's Bad because it has led to people with legitimate pain being unable to get the pain-killer drugs they need. Doctors are scared to death that if they prescribe these drugs they'll be on the government's radar.

I question 'legitimate pain' anymore.

I have a horrible back injury yet I refuse to take pain meds. Why? I value being LUCID and prefer to know what's going on around me. I just deal with it. I know an ex-MCSO "officer" who was addicted to pain meds and he manufactured a great number of illnesses and saw every doctor and dentist in town in order to keep his pain meds coming. Yet the MCSO never drug tested him. What I'm getting at is that far more of these persons "in pain" are simply looking for escape than are really in NEED of pain meds.

My experience is that doctors are VERY willing to prescribe pain meds and narcotics. I just refuse the scripts.

We already have a pill mill.

We already have a pill mill. It is Truman Medical. Go in for a hang nail, come out with Oxys. That is what Key West needs, none junkies.

I thought it was

shut down still. Yes, you are correct. It's a pill mill for sure. I know someone who got their oxy's there...30 day Rx several times a month and sold them. And no, I am no friend. I am part of a family picking up the pieces after his damage was done.

Eliminates the competition

Eliminates the competition for the homies.
