Monroe County Sheriff Rick Roth reorganized the department, promoting Bob Peryam to major and putting him in charge of operations countywide.

A stolen 70-foot Cuban fishing boat with 21 refugees aboard ran aground on Eastern Dry Rocks and damaged the coral reef.

Manuel P. Ortega and Mario E. Santana were appointed deputy commissioners of the Florida Hotel and Restaurant Commission. Ortega covered the Lower Keys to Craig Key and Santana from Craig Key to South Miami.

The Monroe County Library learned that Gov. Farris Bryant had decreed a special state grant of $25,716.

Lt. Cmdr. M.L. Schenker relieved Lt. Cmdr. R.E. Munly as commanding officer of the USS Quillback.
