Plea deal accepted
45 days in jail and $20K is punishment

Two defendants and a contractor with a well-known Florida Keys construction family charged in an eviction-related fight last year will spend 45 days in county jail and pay $20,000 each in restitution to two victims in the case, lawyers said Tuesday.

Paul Edward Toppino, 69, was charged with felony burglary with assault or battery while armed, allegedly with a loaded .380-...

Old men...

That should be representives in the community (Toppino & Bethel)are just Old Boys with money and an Entitlement Attitude. Both Shame their family name.

Remember OJ

and his karma.....it caught up to him.....the same will happen here

Whoever calls the police first is the big winner.

Lozano is a tiny little woman. The tenant has threatened her repeatedly. She was not planning any trouble, and indeed was there in high heels and an evening dress. The tenant has now hit the lottery. Her big mistake of course is an illegal form of legal self help. The DA and cops hate legal self help. There wasn't any real assault with any real injury. It was a big ado about not much of anything, though her choice of friends to help sealed her fate in my view. This should stand as a good lesson to all landlords who think they can enter a tenants room and evict the tenant themselves without going through the legal process. Going into the tenant's space is what doomed them. Doing better background investigations would go along way to nipping problems in the bud.

Doomed ? Toppino bought his way out of jail

Showing up with a gun and being armed proved prior intent. I had thought Jones would have been fair and dispensed justice. But he only demonstrated that the law is different for the rich.

landlord rights

the story should have included exactly why they were trying to get the tenant out. Was the tenant up to date with his rent? Was property destroyed? Why did this happen? There must be a long term disagreement. And landlords should have the right to get tenants off their property without a long drawn out affair. Seems like the guy was not leaving tho the landlord wanted him out. Was the lease up?

Another Key West Graduate

I think there is a course at Key West High or is it FKCC on how to get out of jail if you are a Conch, shady place these keys are. Joe normal citizen does this they would be locked up for years but not these bubba s.

how did this happen when

how did this happen when florida has mandatory minimum sentnces for crimes committed with guns. guess the keys aren't part of florida any longer.

ONLY IN KEY WEST

Can you pull off a multi count felony while armed and walk away with a slap on the back from the "as much justice you can pay for system" I wonder if they are starting a new social club? "Felons R Us" Little Jimmy Hendricks and Paulie T founding members. Had this been Joe Blow the bartender we'd be reading about the sap going upstate for a 15 to 20 bid. Does ANYONE keep an eye on this criminal enterprise down here? Does a Yacht Club membership come with a get out of jail free card if you pay the $1 yearly lease? WOW!

Wow!

Defense attorney Jerry Ballarotto must be one hell of a lawyer.

Sad

He gets to plead down a felony to a couple minor misdemeanors and only does 45 days??? That's BS. He should have done 3 years minimum and can certainly afford a much bigger fine. Nice to have the right last name. I guess justice is not blind in Key West.

This is not what I call punishment.

Interesting how this Ballarotto character has his thumb stuck in Bubbaville at all levels. He defends the most crooked of the Bubba bunch.

Slap on the wrist.

typical

Fairness in Justice? WOW!

Mr. Bethel's son got 3 years in prison for pulling 1 lobster trap and Paul Toppino from the Toppino family get 45 days in the county jail for felony theft and assult with a loaded gun. Where have we lost our fairness in our justice system?

well said

I could not agree with you more..pull a trap or buy crack get prison...use a gun in a felony, have money, get probation...priceless

Sort of

But you forgot the part where Mr. Bethel threw a flaming torch on top of an occupied structure and almost roasted some humans alive. And his various drug related offenses, etc. I'm not suggesting the justice in either case was fair and equitable, but don't paint Mr. Bethel with a choirboy brush. He is far from it.

No cash infused slaps on the wrist at my castle bubba

Acting as your own goon, being easily manipulated by a woman, handling your own evictions; boy Paulie your a ripe old plum ready to be consumed aren't you? I know, you wanted to feel that old high again, inhale their sweet smelling fear while you watch them urinate all over the floor. You can do it some more Paulie, you've got the money.
