Benjamin Gilday Saunders, Jr., 82, of Key West, Fla. passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Sunday Dec. 16, 2012. Ben was born Sept. 15, 1930 in Bronx, N.Y. to the late Benjamin and Margaret (Demeritt) Saunders.

He was a graduate of Key West High School class of 1948 and served in the U.S. Air Force for four years. Ben worked in civil service as a ship-fitter at the Key West shipyard for 16 years. He then moved to Orange Park, Fla., where he worked civil service in the public works department at Naval Air Station Jacksonville.

He was a member of the Key West United Methodist Church and enjoyed singing in many church choirs over the years.

Ben is survived by his wife Jeannette Saunders of Key West, Fla.; daughter Lori Wagoner-Piekarz of Sarasota, Fla.; son Bobby (Rhonda) Saunders of Key West, Fla.; sister Audrey (Douglas) Herron of Luguna Vista, Texas; brother John "Teddy" (Peggy) Saunders of Beaufort, S.C.; sister-in-law Claudia Saunders of Clearwater, Fla.; grandchildren C.J. Wagoner, Corey (Mel) Wagoner, Colby Saunders, Griffin Saunders, Laiikn Linseman, Adlin Linseman, Cameron Piekarz and Dutch Saunders.

Numerous nieces, nephews and cousins survive. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Thomas Saunders.

Memorial services will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday Dec. 19, 2012 at the Key West United Methodist Church, 600 Eaton St. Key West, FL. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Hospice of the Florida Keys or Alzheimer's Association. The Dean-Lopez Funeral Home is entrusted with all funeral arrangements.
