A Key West man has been charged in the case of a dead dog found in a cage just off the first bridge separating Big Coppitt and Geiger keys in September.

Sheriff's deputies arrested Darrell Eacholes, 28, of 2685 N. Roosevelt Blvd., on Monday and charged him with second-degree misdemeanor unlawful disposal of an animal. Eacholes faces a maximum penalty if convicted of 60 da...

he didn't kill it

Having known this family for a really long time, it all ends up being a bad decision after the death of the puppy. The guy freaked out thinking his kids were going to see that their young dog had passed away from its illness. There is absolutely nothing worse than losing a member of your family. Not to say that veterinarian care is not through the roof, outrageously expensive and many times, not all that good here in Key West but its major trauma to wake up and see your pet dead in his cage. Bad decision but he had no part in the death.

I don't think so

Do you really believe this? There a much easier ways of disposing of a dead pet then that. Why didn't he keep the cage? No one throws a dead dog in a cage in a canal. As Judge Judy says, if it doesn't make sense, it isn't correct. Sorry, I don't buy it.

Exactly

He took the effort to have the dog in the cage, WITH a blanket and then drove to a spot and dumped it. That took some thinking on his part, regardless of how little it was. Why did he lie to the police when they asked him about the cage? Why didn't he go to the police when the story first broke and turn himself in? WHY? Because he knew what he did was wrong. I pray they never let this piece of crap ever own a dog (or any other animal) ever again. And by the way, it wasn't a puppy, which doesn't make it any better, but quit calling it a puppy. If this person had been my friend, he wouldn't be anymore because I don't associate with lowlifes like this. His vet could have easily helped him find much more humane solutions. Now his kids know he's an animal murderer... yep, that's SO much better than seeing their dog "resting in peace". Scumbag.

Get your facts together before you talk crap!

People make mistakes get over it! And the Dog passed away before he disposed of it, so get your facts straight! I'm sure your no angel, and if I'm correct on who I think this is your far from that. And you shouldn't talk sh*t if you don't know the facts! Why don't you get a life you loser!

Dog Killing

Throw him off a bridge.....

Heartless

What a series of poor choices made for the Family pet. I feel sorry for the small children in their care as well.

Give Detective Cruz the reward!

Detective Cruz should DEFINITELY get the reward. He absolutely earned it. This story....really bothered me. Having "some" closure......helps....BUT.....the owner of the dog was stupid at best. All he had to do was to ask anyone how to handle this situation. He could have easily obtained help....rather than drowning this poor animal. AND.....HE DIDN'T COME FORWARD WHEN THE STORY WAS IN THE PAPER.......DID HE? Right.

Bella Rest In Peace

I would like to see the karma train catch up to that man. Let's see how he would like being put in a cage, sick and needing help, then being drowned. What a horrible way to go. What kind of slimy, disgusting, dirty, despicable piece of garbage would do that to a dog? Guess we know the answer to that one. His name is Darrell Eacholes.

Nice guy.

More than likely Bella only became unresponsive AFTER he threw the dog into the water.

Methinks they killed it...

...because they couldn't afford to pay for it's medical care. After all if it was dead, then it's a simple matter and they could have kept the cage.
