The nation needs to ban assault rifles and high-capacity magazines as a response to last week's school massacre in Newtown, Conn., of first-graders and their teachers, Key West Police Chief Donie Lee said Wednesday.
Lee asked the Key West City Commission to approve resolutions urging Congress to install the bans and require background checks and safety training on all fir...
Keep in mind many Republicans are now turning against the NRA, such as Mayor Mike Bloomberg of NYC. If you want to know how easy it really is to buy semi-automatic weapons in great quantities in certain states, read this:
http://features.blogs.fortune.cnn.com/2012/06/27/fast-and-furious-truth/...Voth's mandate was to stop gun traffickers in Arizona, the state ranked by the gun-control advocacy group Legal Community Against Violence as having the nation's "weakest gun violence prevention laws." Just 200 miles from Mexico, which prohibits gun sales, the Phoenix area is home to 853 federally licensed firearms dealers. Billboards advertise volume discounts for multiple purchases.
Customers can legally buy as many weapons as they want in Arizona as long as they're 18 or older and pass a criminal background check. There are no waiting periods and no need for permits, and buyers are allowed to resell the guns. "In Arizona," says Voth, "someone buying three guns is like someone buying a sandwich."By 2009 the Sinaloa drug cartel had made Phoenix its gun supermarket and recruited young Americans as its designated shoppers or straw purchasers. Voth and his agents began investigating a group of buyers, some not even old enough to buy beer, whose members were plunking down as much as $20,000 in cash to purchase up to 20 semiautomatics at a time, and then delivering the weapons to others.
Educate yourself. Read. Learn.
We are saying there has to be background checks on buyers in all situations, including gun shows and armslist.com. We're also saying bring back the AR-15 assault weapons ban and do away with the Tiahrt Amendments which make it harder for law enforcment to track down violent criminals possessing illegal weaponry.
America has 5% of the world's population, but we own 50% of the world's weapons. Notice anything asymmetrical about that? Ever stop to think why this country might have more homicical maniacs with semi-automatics and magazines which can carry hundreds of rounds? It's because we have more guns!
I own a gun. I don't fear someone is coming after me to "take away my gun". The 2nd Amendment gives me the right to own arms. But the men writing our Constitution and earliest Amendments never in their wildest dreams imagined weapons which would allow a shooter to kill so quickly and so many people at one time. Back then, you loaded a mini-ball with powder, a wick or firing cap, and took one shot.Let me ask you, Big Man, why is it so many gun nuts collect so many guns if they can't all have their triggers pulled at one time by the owner? Why the need to have an arsenal of guns in your home which could outfit an entire platoon of people? And why is it that out of all the guns a homicidal gun nut owns, the choice of weapon is a semi-automatic which does the most damage in a rampage? How come they don't leave the semi-automatic assault weapon in the car and simply carry a small 22 pistol into the school to rampage? You know, carry a box of bullets. Shoot, reload, shoot, reload, shoot, reload. I'll tell you why. The want maximum pain in minimum time. A 22 ain't gonna do it. The assault weapon will.
You seem confused about the bullets and weapons which shoot them.
A regular .22 pistol or rifle (good for shooting rabbits, squirrels, opossum, etc.) with .22lr bullets won't even go through a steel pipe. An AR 15 (or Bushmaster replica) using the same caliber bullet will pierce steel pipes. And because the ammo for an assault weapon packs more velocity, it is also better for shooting at targets at long distances.Next, the .223 bullets used in the killings of school children up in Newton were found to be of the variety which expand upon entry and tear out more of organs and tissue. We haven't even begun to outlaw such a bullet in the USA because the NRA will squeal like little girls.
Also, the weapon of choice at Newton, a Bushmaster .223 assault weapon, was the weapon of choice in this week's Webster, NY fire/first responder murders when a convicted felon (he'd killed his grandmother with a hammer 30 years ago)used the exact same weapon and ammunition to kill two firemen and injure two others. This killer hid behind a berm and took his shots from long distance. Seven homes were burned to the ground. The same killer murdered his sister and then took his own life.
In Newton, Adam Lanza's aresenal is being tallied. Today it was reported he had hundreds of rounds he never used in his Bushmaster found at the school along with numerous magazines dozens of rounds each.To which I must ask any sane adult: what is the purpose of an assault weapon which can be outfitted with a magazine holding 100 or more rounds or even just 30 rounds?
No one is suggesting we take away weapons. We are saying we need stricter gun laws which allow the authorities to contact a national database showing who owns what and who has criminal or mental issues. And ban assault weapons which allow one shooter to kill so many people in minimum time. There's no need to own a weapon of war which is outfitted with a magazine holding 30 or 100 bullets. But leave them in the hands of mentally deranged people who can buy one at gun shows all over America? Yeah, makes a lot of sense. Tell that to the underarmed cop who lost his life at the Sikh Temple shooting.
