Avis Joan Roberts

Avis Joan Roberts was born to the late Leonard Bennett and Juanita Bennett on Feb. 23, 1942, in Key West, Fla. Avis was the elder of five children born to this union. Ms. Joann, as she was affectionately called, attended Douglass School. She began her Christian life at an early age, uniting herself with Christ.

It was a joyful day in her life when joined in Holy Matrimony to Eugene Roberts on Nov. 29, 1975. To this union Eugene gained five stepchildren.

Ms. Joann received her formal education at Douglass High School. She worked for the Monroe County School Board at Key West High School. And later worked at the Casa Marina. Ms. Joann was a member of the Myra E. Sawyer Key of the Gulf Chapter 5 order of the Eastern Stars Prince Hall Affiliation. And she used to be a member of the American Legion Auxiliary 168 in the 1990s. Ms. Joann participated in churches and organizations in the community. She was an elder of the community, with a loving and generous heart. Her personality and her smile will be greatly missed. Continuing to work as she loved to do, on any given day you could find Ms. Joann serving at a church program repast. Also, Ms. Joann loved to go to bingo and play Pokeno with her friends.

Later in life, Ms. Joann joined St. Mary of the Sea Catholic Church.

Once you met Ms. Joann, you would not forget her. Her personality and smile made her well-known and loved by those she came into contact with. She had many acquaintances, but she cherished the time she spent with her family and closest friends. She was a kind and loving person and would help anyone in need in whatever way she could.

On Monday, Dec. 10, 2012, heaven's gates swung gently open. The Master called softly, "Joann, come unto me and I will give you rest." She answered the Master's call by gently taking His hand and laying her head upon His breast, for you see, her work of 70 years on earth was done. Naturally our hearts are filled with sorrow, but we know that she is in a better place. For the day God called you home, a part of us went with her too.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene R. Roberts; and son Alexander 'Carwash' Pla Jr.

Ms. Joann leaves to cherish her memory four children: Donald (Tammy) Colbert, Cassandra (Dennis) Watts, LaSonya Robinson and Clement Pla; devoted and loving granddaughter, Alexis (Gregory II); eight grandchildren, Donald Jr., Latrice, Micheal, Shantae (Shaun), Brian, Cayla, Marlecia and Ajis; seven great-grandchildren, Damon, Donald IV, Nyla, Daymara, Ariana, Asia and Baby Greg; siblings Gregory Bennett, Don Bennett, Rudolph Bennett and Noil Rucker; two sisters-in-law, Jerline (Peter) Valdez and Judy Poitier; one uncle, Rodney (Addie) Stewart; three aunts, Bloneva Pratt, Hyacinth Jones and Jackie (Henry) Roberts; devoted friend, Mrs. Ernestine Curry; and special friends Mr. and Mrs. James and Yolanda Hester. Through life she met some dedicated friends too numerous to mention by name and a host of nieces, nephews and godchildren.
