Local author Haskins to speak

Michael Haskins, author of the Mick Murphy mystery series set in Key West, will be the speaker at the next Cafe con Libros, Jan. 3 at the library, 700 Fleming St.

The free author talk series begins at 9:30 a.m. for coffee and treats, with the author talk at 10 a.m. Haskins is a former Key West Citizen business editor and former spokesman for the city. His books chronicle the adventures of Mick Murphy, a Key West reporter who gets mixed up in political and criminal shenanigans. Books featuring Murphy include "Chasin' the Wind," "Free Range Institution," "Revenge" and "Vampire Slayer Murdered in Key West."

Safe Ride shuttles offered

The city of Key West will provide Safe Ride shuttles for New Year's Eve.

Shuttles begin at 4 p.m. Monday in the Lower Keys and 6 p.m. in Key West and Stock Island; they end at 4 a.m.

The last shuttle trip leaving Key West for Marathon will depart at 2 a.m. from Fausto's, 522 Fleming St.

There will be no bus service on New Year's Day. Normal service resumes Wednesday.


Relay race coming here

The Ragnar Relay, an overnight team, running relay race, will come through the Florida Keys on Jan. 4 and 5. Runners and vans may cause congestion throughout the area between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m. Jan. 5.

A team is made up of six to 12 people, and each person runs three legs. The legs of the race vary in difficulty and distance, from 3 to 8 miles long, allowing elite and novice runners to run together. Over two days and one night, teams run across 200 miles of the country's most scenic terrain, according to organizers. For more information, visit
