20 YEARS AGO

Chief Circuit Court Judge Richard J. Fowler closed the first floor of the Courthouse Annex on Whitehead Street as a health hazard. Dead rats in the ceiling and seeping sewage overhead had been reported.

The federal government expanded its definition of AIDS, which meant more money for Monroe County, which had a disproportionately high number of cases.

Earl Adams, former clerk of court, county commissioner, newspaper reporter, Boy Scout leader and Monroe County historian celebrated his 90th birthday at a party at the county courthouse.

50 YEARS AGO

Noted writing team of Deane and David Heller had chosen Key West as their base of operations. Their two latest books were the "Berlin Crisis" and the "Berlin Wall."

Key Wester Sam Holland recovered a fumble to help the University of Florida upset Penn State in the Gator Bowl.

Dr. W.W. Demeritt, a Key West native and assistant dean at the University of North Carolina, was honored at a dinner of the Monroe County Dental Society.
