500 teams race through theKeys as part of Ragnar Relay

Organizers of a two-day running relay along U.S. 1 on Friday and Saturday have agreed to a set of rules that Monroe County sheriff's officials are hoping will make the event run more smoothly this year.

Last year, Monroe County commissioners and sheriff's officials received dozens of angry calls from residents complaining about the Ragnar Relay, a 200-mile relay from Miami to Key West that backed up traffic on U.S. 1 for miles, and hours.

The relay teams' support vans, often driving alongside runners on the two-lane highway, caused traffic jams by slowing down to cheer on and talk with runners.

At a meeting following the relay, county commissioners relayed the residents' frustrations about the traffic to sheriff's and county staff.

Commissioners discussed not allowing the relay to take place again.

The annual event is scheduled during one of the Keys' busiest times, as both tourists and winter residents generally arrive in late December and early January.

Both sides have been in discussions about how race organizers could ensure a better flow of traffic.

The Sheriff's Office proposed, and relay organizers agreed to, disqualifying runners if their support teams slow down to talk with participants or back up traffic. The organizers also put together a driver training video.

"The vans should keep moving. They should not be stopping," said Alex Moulchin, a spokeswoman for the relay. "We understand traffic is an issue and we are trying to keep it to a minimum."

Also, the Sheriff's Office will have 17 extra deputies and two motorcycle units working Saturday in the Lower Keys and will be posting deputies at the transition stations to make sure traffic is not being slowed and runners are not crossing the highway, sheriff's Capt. Gene Thompson said.

"They know we are serious, and they are being serious as well," Thompson said.

There will be 500 teams with 10 runners each, Moulchin said. The relay starts at 5:30 a.m. Friday in Coconut Grove and ends Saturday at the Southernmost Hotel. Participants will run both day and night.

Traffic on U.S. 1 will be impacted again the following Saturday, as the Lower Keys will play host to its first-ever Iron Man Triathlon, which will have 1,000 participants.

The bike course of the race takes riders from Higgs Beach in Key West to the Middle Torch Keys. The Sheriff's Office will be placing messages on the electric signs throughout the Keys, warning motorists about traffic.

ignorance is...

demanding to cancel an entire event bc ssomebody should get a driving ticket. using your stupid logic, most of the events in key west would be canceled. example: "I demand we cancel fantasy fat fest bc the tourist clog up us1 and traffic in key west can't move." listen up drunks and druggies: the sober people in this community support positive and clean events such as this race . we vote and elect officials who want this also. we are not going away so get used to it.

No, Ignorance is

Being a cruel bigot. Your credibilty as a fair minded person was flushable as soon as you uttered the word "fat" , indicating that you judge people based on their appearance.

Well, duh.

If by now you can't see what the complaints are really about, there's no hope for you. Keep living in your fantasy world., moron.

Awesome event...

The negative comments here are from people who probably benefit from lazy tourists sitting on bar stools getting drunk. This is a positive and healthy event which promotes a lifestyle, that if it took hold, would hurt the bottom line of many florida keys business, especially in key west. this small town has been promoted as the anything goes party town and attracts many undesireable drunks and druggies here. I say welcome to runner and positive minded folks like this group. i hope the county and city officials continue to promote events other than fantasy fat fest. i applaud the event organizers of this event. ignore the negative comments here because these people don't speak for all of us.

Promoting a Lifestyle

Have you looked at some of the team names?

Way off.

Your post is ignorant. The complaints are about the traffic and the way the support vans slow down to a crawl and sometimes even stop on US1 causing unnecessary back ups and road rage. To relate the complaints to drunks and druggies is just stupid. And no, the lack of this event would not have any effect on the bottom line.

It took me three hours to

It took me three hours to get home from Key Largo yesterday without this stupid race. Can you imagine the traffic today with all the people driving down for the weekend? At what point does public safety and convenience for locals trump money and tourists? Oh wait, this is Monroe County... Sorry I asked.

WHY do WE have to suffer?

These people are ARROGANT......DON'T care about anyone but themselves.....and think that they own the road. Allowing this stupidity again this year.....is asking for trouble. Why should the taxpayers of the lower keys have to deal with this? WHO....exactly....voted to allow this again? LIST THEIR NAMES.

Easy There

Weds2go. I guess you don't like tourists unless they are here to get married.

We Shall See

Those idiotic van drivers caused absolute pandamonium last year. It didn't help they cared nothing about local traffic. Sound your horn at them and they respond by going slower. This year will be a test. If they don't heed MCSO's warning and pull this crap again, the county better be ready for much more backlash. It's bad enough the county allows this during snowbird season, but with the increasing traffic over the years and this county being looooong overdue for a 4-lane highway, nothing should be allowed that impedes traffic on US1.

Idiots.

What else can we say about county and city officials who approve an event on this scale when US1 is under construction and it's peak season?

For once

I agree with you.
