State gives go-ahead to Fury
Five-year lease gives watersports company access to bay bottom

Fury Water Adventures will receive a lease from the state to rent state-owned bay bottom off Key West Harbor.

I am usually the first to cry foul and assume everything is a conspiracy..but as someone with a little inside knowledge, I will tell you that the states hands were tied by the letter of the law. Many of the rank and file state and fed employees wanted to deny this permit on principal, but Fury jumped through every legal hoop and spent lots of money to meet all the letters of the law, so yes it came down to money, but it was all legit. I am sure they have pull with our local city bubba goverment but not any higher than that. Also not mentioned is the fact (i believe)the permit also requires them to pay the state a % of the gross from the tours they run there. I dont want that shit out there any more than the next guy, but they met the letter of the existing laws, and thats why they got the permit. End of story.

Sad day in Key West. One more step away from Eco friendly, sustainable tourism, toward mass tourism crap. At what point will we reach the tipping point where tourists realize this dirty island, with non reliable winter weather and bad beaches, is not special or funky? When will they realize climbing walls and jet skis are available all over the world and there are places with much warmer winters, better beaches and reefs actually still alive? It will take some time, but my guess is we will go from massively popular, to no longer desirable over the coming 5-10 years. Enjoy the money while you can. Someone needs to put a fork in this place... We are done.

How was I trash talking the whole island? Are the winters here reliably warm? No. Is the island clean? No. Are our beaches good? No. Stating facts is not trash talking. People come here for an image of a funky , laid back town that is walkable and unique. We are in real danger of losing this. If you care, do something. If you don't, shut up.

For those who no longer care to travel abroad, yes, the winters are most definitely better here ! A few chilly days ruins the whole winter for you ? The island is cleaner than it has been in past years. And, since you don't know me, I guess you don't know, that I actually do what I can. I pick up trash all over this island every day. And I volunteer for many events. The island remains unique in it's own way. And it is very walkable/bikeable. Personally, I have little use for Duval St. (or similar areas) so I am not bothered by the Fury kisoks; however, I do agree that a lot of what they due is unhealthy for our reefs, but so are all the cruise ships. I've never heard anyone say they came here for 'funky'. Most people come here to relax, enjoy the weather, fish, enjoy the festivals, music, art & dine in our many, many fine restaurants. As for 'shut up', I do find that rude and immature. Cheer up. You will enjoy your life more.

Thanks for your concern but I am very happy. I could live anywhere in the world, but I chose here. I just post this stuff to get people like you riled up. Glad to hear you are picking up trash all over the island every day. Sounds like an existence some can only dream about. By the way, last I checked The Virgin Islands were part of the US. You don't have to go out of the country for reliably great weather, beautiful beaches and pristine reefs. You might want to get out more.
