Power bill discounts available for some

Senior citizens and disabled veterans on a limited annual income once again are eligible for a discounted monthly power bill.

Keys Energy Services this week opened enrollment for the discount program, which is available to residents 62 and older and to American veterans who are "totally or permanently disabled," according to a statement from the utility. Annual household income cannot exceed $30,396, which is a figure based on the maximum benefits paid by Social Security, the statement said.

Once qualified and accepted into the program, customers will receive a $9.53 discount on their monthy energy bills.

Applications for the discount must be received by March 31. Customers who previously qualified and received the discount must apply again, emphasized Julio Barroso, spokesman for Keys Energy.

Applications for the program already have been mailed to previous participants, Barroso said, adding that completed applications must be notarized if they're not completed at the Keys Energy offices.

New applicants may pick-up an application form at KEYS' offices in Key West at 1001 James St. or by visiting www.keysenergy.com or calling 305-295-1090 to request an application be sent by mail.

Rich and poor

The posts below show what a huge gap there is in this country between the poor and others. Believe it or not, $10 per month means something to some people. I recently helped a friend move his father down here. He moved into a small condo on South Roosevelt with very low rent for Key West. His electric bill is about $40 pr month. This is a 25 percent reduction and enough to pay a co-pay on one of his monthly prescriptions. I know it does not seem like much, but for some people choosing between food and medicine, every dollar matters.

Wow

A whopping $9.53? I wonder what they'll do with all that money they save.

Some discount!

My, Keys Energy is sure generous. LESS than $10! That isn't even worth my time to bother with. My electric bill is $250 to $300 a month. $9 dollars and change, you got to be kidding. This isn't worth the newsprint it is printed on and not much of a PR bump, that is for sure.

that's pretty moronic since

that's pretty moronic since the bottom income for a permanent and totally disabld veteran is $33792 as of January 1st, 2013.
