Zecca pleads not guilty, asks for jury trial

Marathon marina manager and former Coast Guardsman Dennis Zecca sat in court Monday next to his lawyer and behind him, in an unrelated case, was a row of men accused of attempting to smuggle drugs with a go-fast boat.

In another time, the former Station Islamorada commanding officer may very well have been one of the arresting crew who captured the accused smugglers at se...

Mistake?

Impossible! This wasn't written by a pajama-clad blogger, but a highly trained professional journalist, backed up by experienced editors and fact-checkers. Don't you believe in the First Amendment?

Sounds like a mistake

The last time I checked, if you plead guilty, you waive your right to a trial. It automatically goes to a sentencing phase.

Come on Citizen!

So what was it? Guilty or Not Guilty? The title and article say 2 different things.

Wow

I went to this arraignment yesterday the man did not say a word he did not make a move. The judge was doing the process via satellite TV. It's interesting that he pled guilty. I wonder how his lawyer will spin this.

Trials now for the guilty?

Is "guilty" a journalistic mistake, or has our country really slid downhill to the point where even the admittedly guilty are entitled to a jury trial? Innocent after proven guilty? Time to pack for Costa Rica?

Zecca

How do you plead guilty and then ask for a jury trial? That does not make sense to me.

Agree. I found this to be confusing.

If he's admitted gilt, he should not waste taxpayer time and money with a trial.

Pleads guilty? Asks for a jury trial?

Like duh, there is no need for a trial to determine guilt or innocence if the defendant pleads guilty. A retired ex-Coast Guard Commander is quite familiar with court procedures. Zecca sounds like he's senile now, which would explain the ease of setting him up by some 12 year ex-inmate turned DEA rat for hire, who's likely trying to get his hands on the $20,000 so he can split the country. With the informer likely lying to everyone and the retired Zecca being senile, if there was a jury trial I would tend to think they would need to see video instead of only audio evidence on this one.

Zecca Pleads

Why would he plead quilty and ask for a jury trial, would it be possible the Citizen reporter made a mistake.

Guilty Plea

Perhaps Zecca did not "mull" it over enough, as the writers like to say in many of their story titles.

Preposterous!

Preposterous! This isn't something written by an irresponsible, pajama-clad blogger. It was written by a trained professional journalist backed up by experienced editors. How could it possibly be a mistake? What about the First Amendment?
