Schools' bullying policies studied
But teen's recent suicide not directly linked to trend

On Jan.13, ninth-grade Key West High School honor student Matthew Logan Gilleran shot himself at his Old Town home. He died later at a Miami hospital.

In the wake of Gilleran's tragic death, School District officials such as Superintendent Mark Porter and Principal Amber Archer Bosco have stated they have no reason to believe that school bullying was a factor.

My child was bullied and the

My child was bullied and the cheerleading coach did nothing to stop it. My child was made to feel badly and the bully was glorified. That coach was Amber Bosco.

Yeah, right

Amber has not been the cheerleading coach for at least 8 years and now you complain. Why do you continue to pick on her? Are you just so jealous you can't help yourself?

8 years?

It has not been 8 years? 5 years at the most. You are such a good friend that you should know.

Better late than never. Parents are bullied and intimidated by

teachers and administrators.

Exasperated; have you not gotten enough negative

responses to know when to stop? Amber may not be the official current cheerleading coach but you wouldn't be able to tell otherwise. The problem here is most of her clique haven't developed emotionally past thier high school glory days .Like you as part of the clique defend it's actions despite how wrong it may be. The coverups, affairs, favoritism, and cronyism all become the norm and you tout it as "Conch pride". What a sense of delusional grandour your clique has. You ride the coat tails of your parents to your positions with no actual qualifications of your own. Other Conchs aren't jealous, they are embarassed for you.

Robin Smith-Martin

My deepest sympathies and condolences to the friends and family of this boy.

From the article: School Board member Robin Smith-Martin stated, "This was a personal tragedy that has little to do with our schools ... . As indicated by authorities, including our chief of police, this tragedy had little to do with bullying. This is about a child's unfettered access to a firearm."

Well i'll be damned. Poor kid spooked the gun and it shot him.

Seriously though: obviously something was troubling the kid mentally whether he told someone or not. Robin Smith-Martin, you are wrong sir.

Ashamed!

Terry Schmida, you and the citizen should be ashamed for printing this article the way you did. You both are in fact, bullies! There is a family that requested to be left out of any article regarding this topic and yet you printed their names in it anyway. A woman did not want to take part in your act of bullying and you had to mention that she "backed out". I can see why she would not want her name associated with this article. Bullying comes in many forms. It is not just a school boy making fun of another or taking his lunch money. It also includes doing things to people against their wishes and that is exactly what you did. I don't know where you get the nerve to disrespect the wishes of people that have just suffered a great loss or are trying to protect their children. Do you even realize that you may have put a child in more danger by printing what you did or do you just not care? Are you more concerned about a headline than the people of this community? It looks that way to me! I would love to hear from you or someone else from the paper as to why you decided to ignore these requests and print their names and comments anyway. Please direct your response to Evil Rob as my name has not been shown in many of my recent comments. I would not want anybody to think I am hiding behind an anonymous post concerning this topic.

News is news.

Not much you can do.

Amen

You should have seen the email he sent me after I challenged him on the "backed down" comment. A nasty innuendo filled diatribe in which he challenged my honesty. The Citizen must scrap the bottom of the barrel to find its staff.

The community, including

The community, including folks in the schools, needs to be cautious when using the term "bullying" because the term has become so commonplace that it borders on crying "wolf," minimizing the real impact that real bullies, perpetrators of repeated and targeted abuses of power against a single target, have on actual bullying victims. We need to teach young people the value of resilience and that just because someone has an unkind thought or word about us, that person is not a "bully." Age-appropriate conversations about how to independently navigate society are desperately important because without that independence, we will cultivate a generation of perpetual victims who has not learned to solve its own problems. The real tragedy is in ignoring the warning signs of mental illness and in not providing timely and adequate treatment.

So if you live together

So, if you live together you are having sex? Did he divorce his wife? No, that shows you "Nothing" will come between him and his wife. Goodness, she destroyed his life and he is still married to her. Do you really believe he would do this to his wife? No! Maybe you don't understand at least these two Conchs stick together. Sorry you have never experienced friends who really care about you.

Seems some posts are now deleted and others

spoke the truth and never made it online. I guess the "legacy of nepotism " statement was a little too accurate. I would like to see ALL the posts related to this story published including those which may besmirch the character of some officials who decisions in the past have dubious. I would love to expose some of the goings on which are totally inappropriate but only the moderator would see them.

WTF are you talking about?

From your other comments on this site, it must be some defense of Conchs... but I have no idea what you are talking about.

If you are bullied, do this:

1. File a police report against the person doing this to you. There are laws to protect you. Use them. Don't wait for the school system to investigate itself. 2. Tell an adult at the school. They are required by law to report it to authorities. 3. Follow up this conversation with an email to administrators at the school, school board members and the superintendent. This email will become a matter of public record and can be used in a court of law if, god forbid, someone is hurt in the future due to bullying. 4. Call the school district hotline and report the abuse. This can be done anonymously and they are required by law to investigate. 5. Use your cell phone to document the bullying. If you are the victim, you can turn on the video camera mode and put the phone on your desk or in your pocket or in your bagpack and it will record a high quality audio of the incident, then go file the police report. 6. If you are a witness to the bullying, use your cell phone to record it. Go to an adult immediately and show them the video. 7. If you see online bullying post on facebook or twitter, print out the posts and tell your parent. 8. If you are the victim of online bullying, print out posts and submit this with your police report. The most important thing with bullying is to document the bullying in anyway you can. Just pointing the finger at someone and accusing them isn't enough. If your bullying accusation can't be proven, then you have nothing to go on. That is how the judicial system works. Short of having witnesses or proof, then you have nothing. You can't convict on rumors and false accusations. In the case of this poor child, there is no proof of any bullying. The family didn't see any and the police didn't find any after investigating. Seems it's simply a very tragic case. Remember, be proactive and TELL SOMEONE & BRING THE BULLY OUT OF THE SHADOW WHERE HE/SHE THRIVE.

Bullying

Bully's are what they are, they continue their practice even after high school and college. Bully's are the first to scream foul once they are adults. They hide behind money and their contacts. The only way to stop this cycle is for people to document it with cameras. We all have cell phones in this day and age. The other is the squeaky wheel. This little piss ant city can be overturned at any moment, all it will take is someone with more money than the richest Bubba who has his talons embedded in the local government. So., until then this one human family is screwed, and at the mercy of the inept local government....

They learn it from their parents.

Just look at all the Bubbas in town who waddle about threatening others? Remember all the threats from Bubbas and co-crooks in the Citizen when the Acevedos were exposed?

Come on Citizen proofers...

Don't rely solely on spellcheck: "rumor that's been common currency (currently??) among area educators"

I told you so

I told you Amber was on top of this. This story proves my point. Now, for all you naysayers out there, stop crying and talking about her and other conchs. As I stated earlier, 99.999% of you would run from your friends and family if they got in trouble, she doesn't. She moved in with Randy to help him keep his house and save it from foreclosure while all other so-called friends turned their backs on him. If it wasn't for Monique being a admitted thief and admitted drug addict, Amber would be either the superintendent or deputy superintendent and no one would have even heard of Porter. The conchs need to unite and put an elected superintedent back on the ballot. Amber would win just like the conchs defeated Dennis Ward. Bring back the good ole days.

"She Moved in with Randy" ???

Ok she moved in with Randy?...Married man..You must have very LOW morals..Randy KNEW what Monique was doing and so did his secretary, she covered it up for them as did all the other low live conch's (bubba's). TRASH..

You are a piece of work

You must be related to Bosco to be crying all over these threads about the poor misunderstood and mis-judged saint. By the way, in a previous thread you were quick to jump on someone's mistake in posting. You have a few also.

It Probably Is Amber Bosco

Who's posting as "Exasperated".

They keep ignoring the truth

They keep ignoring the truth because it is bad media. They need to listen to the students who say that bullying is a problem. There is an issue and it is still not being dealt with, the denial is sick. Wake up before it is too late for others.

Capt. Ed

Captain Ed should be advised that stalking is a form of bullying and he shouldn't do it.

Robin Smith Martin needs to

Robin Smith Martin needs to keep his mouth shut. His comments are out of line and inappropriate for anyone much less a public servant representing the people and our schools. He apparently knows more about the entire situation than law enforcement and MCSD administration and feels compelled to voice his opinion even before services have been held for the young man. This display of callous grandstanding on a thin line of a national issue is indicative of his attitude during his tenure on the school board; an overly inflated ego, finally with a soapbox to spew his wise deductions. This situation deserves immediate compassion and a long-term thorough professional investigation with community-wide followup. We are too quick to come to conclusions and resolve matters during a very emotional period. Do not make this tragedy into a sensationalized Citizen story to run week after week pointing fingers, rather, make it about mental health and what we are going to do to prevent the next one. And watch what you say sir, you certainly just lost my vote in the next election. If thoughtfulness and understanding your role as a leader is not motivation to do the right thing, political motivation to remain in office should...

Thank you for this post.

Yes, he is a strange bird, Martin.

Wow... 2500 words...

It's good to hear that the school district has cleared itself of any involvement and the anti-bullying club exists because there is no problem.

Difficult situation.

School principals at all levels are resistant to report and investigate bullying and criminal activity in general because they are afraid it will make their school look bad. I personally know about many crimes which go unreported to law enforcement because they don't want the bad statistics to reflect they are a problem school. I think people would be truly shocked if they new how many drug possession incidents simply wind up as a two or three day suspension and how many violent fights are handled "in house". Anyone who truly thinks bullying doesn't happen in our middle and high schools have never had a child who goes there. But bullying reports "look bad" so it is easier to pretend it doesn't happen.

Yes, it affects

The school's eligibilty to get graded as an "A" school. The graded rating is contingent upon student behaviors as well as academic grades so reporting and documentation of problems mgiht be undesirable for administrators. The current system of grading and rewarding schools has had many unintended consequences as it encourages school administrators to hide problems.

Bullying? What bullying?

Bullying? What bullying?

That's what they say...just

That's what they say...just ask my relative who goes through hell almost daily because of disabilities. And it has seriously been brought to officials attention.

Responsible Reporting

Important Points for Covering Suicide: More than 50 research studies worldwide have found that certain types of news coverage can increase the likelihood of suicide in vulnerable individuals. The magnitude of the increase is related to the amount, duration and prominence of coverage. Risk of additional suicides increases when the story explicitly describes the suicide method, uses dramatic/ graphic headlines or images, and repeated/extensive coverage sensationalizes or glamorizes a death. Covering suicide carefully, even briefly, can change public misperceptions and correct myths which can encourage those who are vulnerable or at risk to seek help. http://reportingonsuicide.org/

BULLING

the principal doe not know what she is say , there is still bullying in the school. if you r not in the sports program or have fam. working for the school you or getting bullyed. when i was in the high school i got bulled ever day n the teachers n the prinicipal let it happen, even the prinipal made me bay for a football players trip .

About firearms?

Smith-Martin says this is about firearms? What in insensitive jerk he is to use this tragedy for his own agenda! If the kid jumped off a bridge would he blame the bridges? If he jumped in front of a bus should all the kids walk to school? The problem is not how this kid chose to end his life, it is THAT he chose to end his life, and that the schools, family, and community either failed to notice his turmoil or failed to help him. Shame on US, not on guns!

Not True

I did not "back out" of being interviewed. Despite the handful of people cited in this article who have denied it, a number of others insist bullying was involved. But let's just cover it up until we have another suicide or even a Columbine incident. Then everyone will whinge and whine about "Why?"
