Deadline for BP claims

Tuesday is the last day for commercial fishermen to file a claim against BP for the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.

Despite no oil reportedly reaching the Florida Keys, a Keys fisherman could file a claim on the basis that his or her business was impacted by the perception that Keys sea life was tainted with oil.

Accused rifle buyer to be sentenced

A Big Pine Key man accused of buying a stolen SWAT assault rifle will be sentenced at 1:45 p.m. July 15 at the federal courthouse, 301 Simonton St., Key West.

Steven W. McClelland, 32, was federally indicted Nov. 15 on charges of possessing a firearm and ammunition as a convicted felon; possessing a stolen firearm and ammunition; and possessing an automatic weapon. He accepted a plea agreement Monday that calls for a maximum 10 years' in prison followed by three years' probation and fines up to $250,000.

He allegedly traded prescription pills for the gun, reportedly stolen from a SWAT member's car by accused burglar 17-year-old Kalvin Cowger, who faces 30 years in prison.


Railroad re-enactment

Step back in time to the early 1900s with a historical re-enactment of the history of the Over-Sea Railroad at 11 a.m. Friday at Bahia Honda State Park, 36850 Overseas Highway.

"Henry Flagler" will be there, along with "other travelers" from that era. Meet on the Gulf side of the Old Bahia Honda Bridge at the train car stage; bring chairs.
