Special meeting set for SHAL

The Monroe County Continuum of Care agency will hold a special meeting at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Wesley House Family Services conference room, 1304 Truman Ave., Key West.

The only item on the agenda is to certify a grant application by the Southernmost Homeless Assistance League (SHAL) for a 2012 Emergency Solutions grant.

As SHAL is still legally the Florida Keys' lead agency in funneling federal grants to the county's nonprofits, it cannot certify its own proposal.

On Feb. 1, the continuum of care nonprofit will become the Keys' lead agency in finding and distributing grants. SHAL will focus on its direct services, including managing the Keys Overnight Temporary Shelter (KOTS).

Human trafficking rally Saturday

Keys Coalition will hold its second annual rally starting at 7 p.m. Saturday at the DoubleTree Grand Key Resort, 3990 S. Roosevelt Blvd., Key West.

There will be two guest speakers: Detective Brice Britenum of the Fort Lauderdale Police Department Special Victims Unit and Allison Good of Delray Beach, a sex trafficking survivor.

Britenum, also a member of the FBI Minor Victim Task Force, participated in the arrest and prosecution of a pimp in Fort Lauderdale who trafficked a 12-year-old runaway from a Florida Keys shelter. The girl was marketed through Backpage. The pimp was convicted and will be sentenced on Feb. 14.

The new U.S. Senate Task Force on Trafficking also will be discussed. For more information, email keyscoalition@live.com.
