24-hour homeless shelter planned
Proposed project for College Road property still in its infancy

Now that a Florida Keyswide homeless census has been released, the city of Key West has some numbers to go on as it plans its first 24-hour comprehensive shelter.

The numbers came in at 29 percent fewer homeless residents, at a grand total of 658 versus the estimates of the last two years, 926.

Mayor Craig Cates, who since his election in 2009 has promis...

Stop

making life so easy here for out of state fugitives. Lets start getting a little harder on these criminals who are hiding here. I am tired of my property getting stolen. 2 people I know were robbed by a bum with a knife right on their own street in old town. I have had enough of this homeless crime wave in the city which I pay a lot of property tax in. If this keeps up people will stop visiting here on vacation and all we will be left with is a reputation for being the Hobo Hilton.

This makes me so angry! I do

This makes me so angry! I do not want any support for the bums who come here to get drunk! But I do want to help any residents/families who have become homeless and need assistance to get back on their feet. How do we tell the difference? Require proof of past residency and employment in this county. Or even easier- remove the bums so that only the homeless remain and we can help them. In Sarasota the police are so effective in dealing with the bums, they have been run out of town. There are no "panhandling zones"- wtf? Why can't our city take on a similar approach and get rid of these guys? They are often unregistered child molesters and past felons. It should not come at our expense to try and "rehabilitate" out of state bums who choose to be homeless in KW because its nicer here in the winter!

free shuttle

Perhaps we can use a retired city bus to move the homeless between the the flagler soup kitchen, the pan handling zones and their warm cots....oh...we already do that and thats why i never ride the bus here

Word IS out

I got news for you the word is already out.

I'll say it again.....

Not kidding. Drive around Marco Island.....ANYWHERE. NO HOMELESS. Where.....are they? HOW....do they do it? Maybe....WE should find out. YOU NEVER SEE 1 HOMELESS PERSON....ANYWHERE. HOW can that be?

All we have to do is make the librarys into 24 hour facilitys.

They are part-time homeless facilities as is.

It has been said...

Build it, and they will come.

Petting Zoo

The travesty continues. At least Mr. Rossi has the common sense and cajones to speak the truth about this issue. The cost to the taxpayers for the proposed human petting zoo and spa for the homeless will be tremendous. Wait until the word gets out that we have built a spa for the homeless. The homeless population will continue to swell. Between the new spa and the multiple local feeding stations Key West is positioning itself to be the preferred homeless destination for years to come.

In the next election

this will be an issue. The right candidate will defeat Cates based on the homeless shelter and its residents impact our on our community. Yesterday I watched as a bicycle was systematicly stripped over a few hours. Hit and run theft, take a tire and disappear, come back later and take the seat; then later the other tire. Soon only a frame remained. Look on craigslist to see the amount of stolen bikes posted. Just like ants they come for your picnic. Time for some bug spray.

Did you

call the police to report a crime in progress? If not, you're as guilty as they are.

Actually I did; and since the "owner" of the bike

wasn't there to press charges, nor was the bike registered; the Police said they couldn't do anything. Since that the people stripping it could be the owners was the logic???? Yes , the whole situation frustrated me also.
