John E. Wells, 91, of Leesburg, Fla., passed away on Sunday, Feb. 10, after a brief illness. He was born in Whitesville, Ky., on March 8, 1921.

He entered the Navy soon after graduating as valedictorian of his high school and began a long career of service as a Navy Corpsman, progressing from rank of Seaman Apprentice to Captain, retiring in 1974. He was assigned to Key West Naval Hospital in 1940 for the first of four tours, where he met Dorothy Steadman, his wife of more than 55 years.

He is survived by his three children: Diana E. Bainbridge of Leesburg, Fla., John E. Wells Jr. of Missoula, Mont., and Key West, and Richard A. Wells of Key West. He has five grandchildren: Tracy J. Bainbridge, Donald J. Bainbridge, Evan H. Wells, Kelsey E. Wells, and Rachel A. Wells. He has three great-grandchildren.

He will be remembered by his family and many friends as an intelligent and hardworking man who always got the job done. He had a sweet disposition, with never an unkind word for anyone.

He was extremely proud of his service and fittingly, will be buried with full military honors at 1 p.m. today, Friday, Feb. 15, at Florida National Cemetery at Bushnell, Fla.
