New England transplants looking to spin and sing

KEY LARGO -- A husband-and-wife team is looking for disc jockeying gigs in the Upper Keys.

Larry Holmes and Gabriella Gonzalez have moved Gaby's DJ and Karaoke from New Hampshire to Key Largo, at least for the season, they say. The couple recently bought a home in Key Largo, and Gonzalez, who once lived in the Keys, hopes her connections with such local musicians as Jimmy Hawkins will help her succeed.

"I love it down here," Gonzalez said. "I'm glad we made the move."

Gonzalez began singing on radio stations in Chile when she was 5 years old. In her teenage years, she started performing live with garage bands. So serving as a mobile DJ and, if a client prefers, vocalist, come naturally.

"We're willing to work with people on a budget," Gonzalez said. "We're flexible."

The two hope to begin booking weddings and private events right away. They can also perform at bar mitzvahs, birthdays and anniversaries.

"We're a cheaper alternative to a live band," Gonzalez said.

The two are also interested in finding a steady location, such as a bar or restaurant, to showcase their talents.

One of their goals is to start a Karaoke Idol contest, which would serve as a spin-off of the nationally televised American Idol program.

In New England, the duo worked different gigs from Maine to Connecticut. But they escaped the wintry weather two months ago and added a second home to their repertoire.

Holmes said he and Gonzalez work well together with him at the controls and her at the microphone.

"It's a lot of fun," he said. "We cover the whole gamut."
