Mayor named to state panel

Monroe County Mayor George Neugent was named to a statewide committee that will oversee the doling out of fines from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.

Neugent was named to the Executive Committee of the Gulf Consortium as one of two at-large appointments.

The Gulf Consortium is responsible for the distribution and use of Florida's state share of civil penalties arising from the oil spill.

Friday was the committee's first official meeting; the panel will meet monthly. It next convenes on Feb. 28 in Panama City. Monroe County will host May's gathering.
