Bill's OK would cancel $11M debt
Legislation aims to exempt Navy housing company from property taxes

A bill that would exempt an international development company that partners with the Navy from paying $11.3 million in Monroe County property taxes cleared its first hurdle Tuesday.

The state House of Representatives' Veterans and Military Affairs Committee approved House Bill 531 unanimously, 13-0.

Your first chance to vote for something important to Key West and you vote the party line. It didn't take long, did it?

Unconstitutional

This sounds like a special or local law, rather than a general law, and would therefore be unconstitutional under the Florida Constitution. The real estate company is a "closed class" and this law the legislature is trying to pass to help a single company would be constitutionally illegal. I wish the Citizen had a real legal writer would can write on these things.

One question...

Where are our high-priced lobbyists? Or do they only lobby en behalf of the cruise lines?
