Walsh denied new eatery
Mallory Square plan is deemed too big

The City Commission Wednesday night denied businessman Joe Walsh's request to build a two-story, 156-seat restaurant at Mallory Square, killing the project with a 5-2 vote over worries that it would tower over the waterfront tourist spot.

Political courage

Kudos to Commissioners. It would have been all too easy to have hidden behind the possible rent to come into City coffers, or feel obliged to agree to the new restaurant because this proposal had been allowed to run for way too long. But Commissioners listened carefully and some clearly changed their minds having looked carefully at the impact this development would have had on the openness and views across Malory Square. I hope Mr Walsh will come back with a more appropriate scheme better suited for this location.

Public decisions deserve scrutiny at every level...

Commissioner Yaniz's loyalty should be with the citizens of Key West not the applicant, just because the developer has waited a long time. Approve in haste... repent at leisure. An oversized building at Mallory will remind us of its folly for the next fifty to seventy-five years.

Thank you city for not letting this corrupt business owner take over the waterfront. It is bad enough we have the cheesy money grubber down there with two (at least he doesn't steal tips, yet)
