FIRM's annual meeting in Key West

Fair Insurance Rates in Monroe (FIRM) invites the public to its Key West and Lower Keys Annual Meeting from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Feb. 26 at the Harvey Government Center, 1200 Truman Ave., in Key West.

FIRM President and County Commissioner Heather Carruthers will give an update on FIRM's recent successes and activities as well as goals for ensuring fair windstorm insurance rates for Florida Keys property owners, including legislative priorities.

Carruthers will also discuss FIRM's independent Windstorm Risk Remodeling and Analysis Initiative, a step toward an accurate wind risk profile.

The grass-roots group also will offer suggestions on lowering premiums and how policyholders can help with FIRM's efforts.

A post reception will be held at Salute on the Beach, at 1000 Atlantic Ave.

PLANTATION KEY

Fiesta, dinner set for Sun.

The community is invited to enjoy a Mexican Fiesta and Dinner from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday in the Williams Hall of San Pedro Catholic Church, at Mile Marker 90, bayside.

It will offer authentic Mexican food, much of it donated by local restaurants and businesses, a piñata for the kids, a professional Mariachi band playing every hour, raffles, silent auction and a cash bar featuring margaritas, sangria and Mexican beer.

Tickets will be $12.50 for adults and $7 for children and may be purchased at the door. Proceeds will benefit the San Pedro Youth group's religious retreat. For more information, call the church office at 305-852-5372.

STOCK ISLAND

Boating course offered

The Key West Sail & Power Squadron will offer America's Boating Course in March at its building, 5205 College Road.

The two-day class covers boat handling, elementary seamanship, navigation aids, weather, marine radios, Florida boating regulations and more. Completion satisfies Florida state boating certification requirements.

Hours will be 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on March 2 and 3.

The fee of $55 covers the cost of materials; a reduced rate of $70 is available for family members who share materials. Graduates will be offered an introductory six-month Power Squadron membership.
