SUV hits, injures scooter driver, totals car

A scooter driver was injured after a green SUV hit him and then totaled a car before its driver fled about 5 p.m. Wednesday, according to a Key West police arrest affidavit.

The SUV hit Charles Mirth, whose face was cut and left shoulder was hurt, at 221 Petronia St. Mirth, whose age and address was were not listed, was treated and released from Lower Keys Medical Center. His red scooter was left "non operable," and its right front and rear fenders broken off, the affidavit says.

SUV driver Jesus Zamora-Tolentino, 20, of the 1000 block of Simonton Street, was arrested on charges of leaving the scene of an accident with injuries and driving without a license. Tolentino, who had a Mexican ID, was taken to jail after being medically cleared for cuts on his eyebrows, the report says.

A woman who reportedly saw the crash told police the green SUV was headed north on Baptist Lane and didn't stop at its intersection with Petronia Street, crashing into Mirth's red scooter, which was going west on Petronia.

The witness said after hitting the scooter, Tolentino ordered his passenger, Juan Bravo, to get out of the SUV. Tolentino then allegedly drove off east on Petronia -- the wrong way -- and south on Thomas Street.

As officers were investigating that wreck, a call came in that a green SUV had crashed into a car on the 1500 block of United Street.

Police arrived to find the totaled car and an abandoned green SUV.

Witnesses reportedly pointed out Tolentino to the officers, who arrested him on the 1600 block of Seminary Street.

Bravo, the ejected passenger, was brought to the scene to identify Tolentino.

"That's Jesus," he allegedly told police.

Tolentino was in county jail on Stock Island as of Wednesday night, under no bail, according to the Sheriff's Office website.
