STEVEN 'STEVIE' MICHAEL WHELCHEL

STEVEN "STEVIE" MICHAEL WHELCHEL, BORN MARCH 6, 1954, PASSED AWAY PEACEFULLY IN KEY WEST ON FEB. 15, 2013. HE IS PRECEDED IN DEATH BY HIS PARENTS, HARRELL AND SHIRLEY WHELCHEL, AND HIS BELOVED SISTER SANDY. HE LEAVES BEHIND HIS OLDER BROTHER, JOSEPH WHELCHEL OF ATLANTA, GA.; HIS THREE CHILDREN WITH HIS FIRST WIFE, KITTY WHEELER, JUSTIN, SEAN AND JORDAN OF KEY WEST, FLA.; AND FOUR GRANDCHILDREN. STEVE WAS BORN IN ST. PETERSBURG, FLA. HE WAS RAISED IN GEORGIA BUT MOVED TO KEY WEST IN HIS EARLY 20S IN THE 1970S AND ALWAYS CONSIDERED THE ISLAND HIS TRUE HOME. STEVE WAS PART OF AN ILLUSTRIOUS GROUP OF FOLKS WHO MOVED TO THE ISLAND IN THE 70S AND WHO ALL FREQUENTED A HANDFUL OF INFAMOUS BARS OF THAT TIME PERIOD, INCLUDING THE HUKI LUAU, THE FULL MOON SALOON, AND THE CHART ROOM AMONG OTHERS. ONE OF STEVE'S GREAT LOVES WAS MUSIC, WHICH WENT BACK TO THE TIME HE SPENT AT THE GREAT SOUTHEAST MUSIC HALL AS A YOUTH IN ATLANTA, GA. AMONG HIS FRIENDS, STEVE WAS KNOWN FOR HIS GENEROUS SPIRIT, HIS FINE COOKING SKILLS, HIS INFINITE KNOWLEDGE ON A WIDE RANGE OF SUBJECTS, HIS UNDYING LOYALTY TO GEORGIA TECH, AND HIS GREAT PLEASURE FOR FISHING AND POKER. IN HIS LATER YEARS, STEVE SPENT TIME WORKING WITH THE NATURE CONSERVANCY, A CAUSE VERY CLOSE TO HIS HEART. HE ALSO LIVED ON THE ISLAND OF PALMYRA ALTOL IN THE PACIFIC OCEAN FOR LONG PERIODS OF TIME DOING ENVIRONMENTAL WORK THERE. STEVE WISHES FOR ALL HIS FRIENDS MADE FROM ALL OVER THE GLOBE TO REMEMBER THE GOOD TIMES THEY SHARED TOGETHER AND RAISE A GLASS IN HIS HONOR. A GATHERING TO CELEBRATE STEVE'S LIFE WILL BE FORTHCOMING.
