No power on No Name -- for now

The County Commission on Tuesday voted against bringing commercial power to No Name Key for now, but didn't rule out doing so in the future.

The actual vote was about building permits, which the county must grant the rural island's residents for them to hook up to power poles installed by Keys Energy Services last year.

Commissioners Heather Carruth...

Let's rearrange the deck chairs on the Titanic

The No Name Key debacle is like the Titanic after it struck the iceberg. You’ve got Mayor George Neugent screaming “ Everyone to the lifeboats!!”. Then you’ve got Commissioner David Rice at the bar, paying his tab saying “Hey, George says I gotta go…”. Then there’s Commissioner Danny Kolhage, he’s managed to find a life vest but he’s going down the stairs thinking that’s where they keep the lifeboats. Commissioner Heather Carruthers is in her First Class stateroom (paid with taxpayer dollars, of course) playing with her dollies and trying to figure out why her diaper smells and where her parents went. Lastly there’s Commissioner Sylvia Murphy. Murphy is standing on the fantail wearing an eyepatch and even though the bow is awash she is screaming that the ship will arrive in New York as scheduled, price is no object, full speed ahead, everyone follow me!! Monroe County lost this battle years ago. Why? Because they were never right to begin with, legally or morally. Look at the damage...over $1 million spent already. Just yesterday nearly $150,000.00 was at stake just to continue this ludicrous, patently unwinnable fight. People, THIS IS YOUR MONEY! Is that what you voted for? Is this what the taxpayers of Monroe want? Hundreds of thousands of dollars spent to prevent 30 homes from connecting to electricity? Stay silent, people of Monroe, but that “unsinkable ship” will never arrive as scheduled, regardless what Commission Murphy says or thinks. It’s already headed to the bottom and your BOCC dumps trash bags full of cash into the frigid ocean hoping to relight the boilers.

I couldn't have said this better

myself.....Killer post narcosis

Once more we see the

Once more we see the favorite game of all our governments' being played, it's called "kick the can down the road". Around here we have seen it played for years with the sewer issue.

Too Stupid

The courts have ruled and the PSC has opined. No county, including the Conch Republic County of Monroe has the authority to regulate utilities. But Monroe County has in fact been regulating utilities without authority for decades. Fraud: Merriam-Webster definition: intentional perversion of truth in order to induce another to part with something of value or to surrender a legal right. This whole mess was created because the County became complicit in one woman’s fraudulent and failed social experiment. The County has used the Coastal Barrier resources act to prevent legally permitted and constructed homes from receiving basic services, doing so is a perversion of the act. The acts intent is to discourage development in undeveloped coastal areas prone to flooding. The act does so by limiting the expenditure of federal dollars. It in no way regulates how people can develop their land and the act in no way hints that utilities can be withheld. The undeveloped status of System lands was an important underpinning of the law. The idea was to help steer new construction away from risky, environmentally sensitive places where development was not yet found, not to hurt existing communities where serious commitments of time and money had already been made. The county comp plan and LDR language relative to utilities was a fraudulent misapplication of the CBRS Act from the very beginning in a stealthy attempt to spot zone NNK. Now the county is faced with the unintended consequences of its actions as evidenced by the issues we are facing now with the sewer system. The county had no more authority to regulate utilities when the comp plan and LDRs were written than it does now. But it doesn’t matter what the county comp plan or LDRs say. Whether the county likes it or not, it’s not the county’s call. The courts have ruled. The county has no authority to discourage, prohibit, forbid, ban, inhibit, bar, prevent, or regulate electrical service in any way. Denying the residents of NNK permits to connect to the existing electrical grid that is in front of their homes, the grid that they paid for, is in fact ongoing regulation of utilities on the part of the county. If the county wants to discourage development, it should not issue permits for homes to be constructed. Period. Any action taken by the BOCC other than directing the building department to issue permits immediately for electrical connection is a further attempt to fraudulently regulate utilities, something the courts have ruled the county has no authority to do. The county has already wasted more than a million dollars trying to regulate utilities on NNK. That is more than the entire electrical grid for NNK cost to install. The county tried, unsuccessfully in the courts to prevent the system from being installed, but the courts rebuffed the county, because the county has no authority to regulate utilities. How many more taxpayer dollars, in addition to the more than a million already wasted, will be wasted in a continuing effort to do what the county cannot? Preventing the residents of NNK from connecting to the installed and energized electrical grid in front of their homes by withholding electrical permits is insanity. Merriam- Webster definition of insanity: “something utterly foolish or unreasonable” Don’t be fooled again.

We need competitive elections

This last election Danny Kohlage and Heather Carruthers were allowed to walk into their posts as County Commissioners. The reasoning was they were too popular to be beat so nobody ran. If they had maybe we would have found out how much they like to spend County Tax Dollars fighting a losing cause for their campaign contributors.

Blame it on Tuell, Markham, Becker and Kahn

They endorse these bums every election.

Cost to the tax payers

These lawsuits have cost us enough, it is time to stop the growling over this bone and others in the county and move on. Just think what we could be doing if we were a little less litigate.

Do you think it's free for the Reynolds?

The only reason these folks are winning now is because after 2004 people that bought on No Name have money. Money and lawyers is the only way to defend yourself from these thieves. If the native Indians had Lawyers back when you would be living in a teepee.

Delay is a Strategy And A Crime

Alicia Putney has often said that if she can't win then her goal is always to prolong the war. She's done that many times and did so, one might say, again today. But she looks tired and so did the Commissioner's. And how could they not be tired of having most people on No Name ask for power for all these years while learning along the way that the County stole their rights when Ms. Putney took a seat on the Planning Commission. The Board and County staff should be ashamed of treating a family like the Eakens this way for 44 years and especially the last ten during Ms. Putney's rein of terror. Read it here first. The State will rule in favor of permits soon and the PSC will, of course, rule in favor of power and before the summer rains arrive so too will the connections. And by then those folks who vacation part time on No Name, like that senile dentist who lives in Massachusetts who spoke today with such arrogance and The Canadian, Ms. Putney, will be back up North where they can tell their friends about their No Name home's with battery operated solar systems to make themselves sound like ecologists when they are nothing more than theives. I say make the criminals pay.

No Name

Let me guess. You watch Fox everyday.

Watching Year After Year of Lies...

Nope. Never even once. I have, however, watched Alicia Putney lie to the Board of County Commissioners over and over and over again for over a decade. Feel however you like about power or other things on No Name, you are entitled to your view and me mine but when a zelot can manipulate a small governement into thinking her entire community thinks the way she does and lies to do so then we all, as citizens in a democracy, have a serious problem. The good news is that no matter what channel you care to watch the news you will be soon seeing is that her lies have caught up with her and that those people will have power sooner than later.

The bloodletting on No Name continues

along with the lunacy of most of the commissioners. Murphy continues to hold the title of “Head Nut” on the board while Neugent seams to be progressing in regaining some semblance of sanity.
