Donations to be matched

A donor who wants to remain anonymous has pledged to match up to $2,500 in donations to the nonprofit Florida Keys SPCA through March 31.

The proceeds will go toward the care and well-being of the animals, says the local Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, which serves as the animal control agency from Mile Marker 0 to 16.7.

FKSPCA handles more than 2,000 animals a year. No animal is rejected.

Write on check, type in note field online or mention by phone "match." Mail or deliver to: FKSPCA, 5230 College Road, Key West, FL 33040, or go to, or call 305-294-4857.

13 Cubans stopped, taken back

The Key West-based Coast Guard cutter Knight Island returned 13 Cubans to the island nation Tuesday at Bahia de Cabañas.

They were stopped at sea Saturday after a Coast Guard Ocean Sentry plane spotted a suspicious boat south of Marquesas Keys. The air crew notified the Key West sector and remained in the area until a patrolling ship arrived. The Miami-based cutter William Flores safely embarked the Cubans, who were later transferred to the Knight Island.

Once aboard a Coast Guard cutter, all migrants receive food, water, shelter and basic medical attention.

"Our migrant interdiction patrols help save lives by deterring dangerous illegal migrant activity and removing migrants from unsafe environments," says 7th District commander Rear Adm. William Baumgartner.

Body found in wooded area

A passer-by who noticed a lot of bird activity at 2:15 p.m. Thursday discovered the badly decomposed body of a man in a wooded area off Sombrero Beach Road, according to a press release from Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Deputy Becky Herrin.

The witness reported finding the body to Sgt. Glenn Test, the school resource officer at Marathon High School.

Detectives said they have a tentative identification from paperwork found near the body, but won't know for sure until further investigation. An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of the man's death. No other information was available Friday evening.
