More than 100 students competed to win new running shoes at Stanley Switlik Elementary's annual Jogathon Run-off held on Friday, Jan. 15. Two boys and girls from each class ran to find out who were the fastest at each grade level. The two boys and two girls at each grade level running the most laps around the 100 meter track during the 20-minute event will be awarded shoes donated by the Marathon Runners Club.

Kindergarten winners include Elena Eubanks, Hanna Valdes, Benito Lopez and Brayan Suarez Diaz. Winners from first grade included Daniela Downs, Reese Elwell, Daniel Chavez and Dylan Ziels. The fastest runners at the second-grade level were Emily Barrera, Natalie Grill, Alexander Perez and Fisher Sayer. Third-grade fast runners were Kayla Sipe, Lindsay Bull, Giancarlos Prieto, Michael Dieguez and Cameron Wert. Fourth-grade shoe winners were Katerina Nikiforova, Mary Ryder, Garrett Andrews and Drake Daniels.

The fastest runners in fifth grade were Lianys Perez, Dallamis Downs, Maximillian Hribar and Darwin Lineras.

Switlik's Jogathon is a schoolwide activity geared toward encouraging student interest in running. When classes ran for a 20-minute period around the track during physical education classes in late January, more than 96 percent of all students completed at least a mile.

Many of the students also collected pledges and donations to earn Frisbees, T-shirts, sweatshirts and other prizes. The student bringing in the most money at each grade level also will be awarded a pair of shoes. Earning shoes as top grade-level fundraisers were David Ornelas, Tommy Norris, Fisher Sayer, Kenton Jones, Carley Childress and Genavieve Town.

Jogathon prizes will be awarded at Switlik School at grade level assemblies on March 15.
