Fantasy Fest seeks poster artists

Organizers of Fantasy Fest 2013 are asking artists to submit their vision of this year's "Super Heroes, Villains ... & Beyond" theme for the annual poster design contest. The winner will receive $1,000, a poster-signing party and recognition as the winning artist or collaborators.

The artwork should reflect the theme and elements that are characteristic of Key West. Photography, cubism, graphic design, watercolors and cartoons all have been used over the past 34 years. Posters may be horizontal or vertical and a variety of sizes are accepted. The submission deadline is June 7. Visit or call 305-296-1817. Entry forms are available on the website, and at the Fantasy Fest office, 1111 12th St., Suite 211, in the professional plaza behind Kmart.

Group to assess police dept.

A Commission for Florida Law Enforcement Accreditation (CFA) team will visit March 26 to 28 to assess the Key West Police Department, which has been accredited since 2003.

Policies and procedures, management, operations and support services will be studied, says police Chief Donie Lee. Compliance with about 260 standards is required to maintain the status, which lasts for three years. For a list of them, call 305-809-1058. Agency members and the general public may submit comments. During the three-day visit, the public may call the team directly at 305-809-1135. Otherwise, email comments to or mail to CFA, P.O. Box 1489, Tallahassee, FL 32302.

Donations to be matched

A donor who wants to remain anonymous has pledged to match up to $2,500 in donations to the nonprofit Florida Keys SPCA through March 31.

The proceeds will go toward the care and well-being of the animals, says the local Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, which serves as the animal control agency from Mile Marker 0 to 16.7.

FKSPCA handles more than 2,000 animals a year. No animal is rejected.

Identify your donation with the word "Match" on a check, in the online note field or mention it on the phone.

Mail or deliver to: FKSPCA, 5230 College Road, Key West, FL 33040, or go to, or call 305-294-4857.
