'Trial' parking rate a $55K loss
Key West Bight lot to go back up to $2.50/hour, needs city approval

Rates at the Key West Bight parking lot will revert to the $2.50 an hour it cost last summer, the Bight Management District Board ruled this week in a 4-0 vote after a brief but stinging loss of revenue.

The city had no idea how much the parking revenue is. Otherwise, former parking employee Gilbert Suarez would have been jailed before he pulled his tax-refund scam. What did he steal? Something like a quarter of a million?

It's clear to see

There was no decrease in either the usage (occupancy rate) or revenue from that lot. What has happened is that when there is a line at both pay stations in the lot, or if one or both of the in-lot stations is broken, or if as the article mentioned they are parked in the lot but are closer to one of the city stations, then customers purchase a ticket at the city station on the sidewalk. In fact city parking staff often direct customers parking in the lot to just buy a ticket from the sidewalk since they are now the same rate.
