Post-Relay For Life event

The local Winn-Dixie Relay For Life team will host a barbecue to benefit the 2013 American Cancer Society of Key West campaign from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 20.

It comes after the Key West 24-hour event that takes place Friday and Saturday at Higgs Beach.

Shoppers may buy barbecue, and, for free, enjoy live entertainment, giveaways and more, according to a press release. Proceeds from barbecue purchases will benefit this year's Relay For Life effort, the release says.

The Key West grocery store is in the Overseas Market shopping center, 2778 N. Roosevelt Blvd., and the event will be held in its parking lot.

Trees given out April 20

Keys Energy Services' 17th Tree Giveaway will be at 8:30 a.m. April 20 at its service building, 1001 James St., Key West and Cudjoe electrical substation, Mile Marker 22, oceanside.

It's first-come, first-serve basis for two free, native, shade trees while supplies last. Additional details about the Tree Giveaway, including a list of what kind will be given out, will come closer to the date.

The power utility's giveaway which began in 1994, is part of a nationwide public power program called Tree Power sponsored by the American Public Power Association. The national goal is to plant one tree for every public power customer, for a total of 16 million trees.

Fundraiser for lung transplant

Kathy "Kat" Simon has lived on Middle Torch Key and worked in Key West for more than a decade at the Half Shell Raw Bar and Seven Fish. She has been living with cystic fibrosis and now needs a double lung transplant.

Her friends and coworkers are organizing a fundraiser Sunday in the hopes of raising $20,000 to help with costs not covered by insurance.

The event will take place from 1-5p.m. Sunday at The Wharf Bar & Grill on Summerland Key. There will be live music by Wayne Hammond, Jeff Clark and Randy Morrow, along with food, drinks, raffles for 13 Key West vacations, and a silent auction featuring two NASCAR tickets, an entry fee for the Islamorada Fishing Tournament and jewelry from Local Color.
