Dorothy Janice Valdez was born March 9, 1927 in Miami, Fla. to George and Mary Thurston and departed this earth on April 1, 2013. She was the fifth child of eight. Dorothy married Ira Anastacio Valdez in Miami, Fla. Their union produced four children.

Dorothy was a very kind, loving and active person. She was a homemaker who loved to cook and share with her family and friends. Her proud moments in life were witnessing the extension of her family throughout the generations.

One of her beloved pleasures was walking all over the island of Key West. Dorothy was an active member of AME Zion Church. She sang in the choir, was a member of the Usher Board and worked countless sales for the church.

Dorothy is survived by her children: Rhonda of Lake Jackson, Texas, Shelley of Tampa, Fla. and Anastacio (Ethel Valdez) of Louisville, Ky. Two sisters; Ceretta Flukers of Key West, Fla. and Ellen Adams of Brunswick, Ga., sister-in-law, Patricia Allen of Key West, Fla., 10 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Dorothy is predeceased by her parents, her beloved husband Ira A. Valdez and her son Ira (Bubba) Valdez Jr.

Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Friday, April 12, 2013, in the Mortuary Chapel. Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. at Cornish AME Zion Church with the Rev. Wc. Haralson officiating. Burial will be in the family plot in the Key West City Cemetery. Castillo & Thurston Key West Mortuary and Cremation Center and staff are in charge of all arrangements.
