Key Largo diners can 'eat fresh' soon

KEY LARGO -- Two planned Subway sandwich shops will add the franchise's presence to the island of Key Largo.

The first was expected to open this week in Waldorf Plaza at Mile Marker 99, oceanside.

A Pennsylvania company is adding that location to its small stable of Upper Keys businesses -- the other being Salon 905.

The new business, based in half of the former Blockbuster location, is expected to offer 10 to 15 part-time jobs and five full-time jobs. The company is now looking to fill those positions, said co-owner Josh Gibson.

Some remaining equipment and a final inspection were the only things the group was still awaiting, Gibson said last week.

Meanwhile, the Tom Thumb gas station at Mile Marker 97.9 is under construction and will have new offerings when it reopens in a few month.

Instead of four pumps, the station will have 12, according to documents filed with the Monroe County Planning Department. A 3,100-square-foot canopy is also under construction.

In addition to tripling the number of pumps, the fuel station will also open a Subway sandwich shop.

The new Subway shops will mark the third and fourth on the island. The others are located at Mile Markers 91 and 106.
