Virginia Leilane Elomina of Key West, Fla., passed away on Monday, April 22, 2013, after a courageous battle with ALS.

She was born on April 3, 1938, in Defiance County, Ohio, to the late William and Virginia Bleeks. After graduating from Sherwood-Delaware High School in 1956, she attended Bowling Green University in Ohio, where she graduated in 1961 with a Bachelor of Science degree in education and a master's degree in education in 1963. She arrived in Key West in 1966 where she began her 30-plus years as an educator with the Monroe County school system, earning Teacher of the Year during her tenure at Sigsbee Elementary. Lonnie was an avid sports fan and she was a constant fixture at the Little League and high school fields, where she watched her beloved children and grandchildren in baseball, football, softball, soccer, Conchettes and cheerleading.

She is survived by her children Donnie (Holly) Elomina of Key West, Denise Elomina-Harris of Arlington, Texas, and Dona (Jimmy) Elomina of Key West; her grandchildren Ashli (Casey) McCune, DJ, Jacob and Jade Elomina and Jemma Elomina Rivas of Key West and Alex, Alyssa and Daniel Harris of Arlington, Texas; her great-grandson Roman Brown of Key West; her sister Willo (Victor) Pent of Campobello, S.C.; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sister Bonnie Head and brother William Bleeks of Key West.

Castillo and Thurston are entrusted with all of the arrangements. A private service will be held for family and close friends at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the University of Miami ALS Center.
