Burglary suspect identified

ISLAMORADA -- Deputies have charged a Marathon-based computer consultant for the break-in at Miss Monroe Boutique on Plantation Key in late March.

The burglary was one of four in Islamorada that the Monroe County Sheriff's Office has said appear to be related.

The early March burglary of Blue Water Weddings on Upper Matecumbe Key, as well as the late April burglaries of Island Flash Bead Design and Edward Jones Investment, both on Plantation Key, remain under investigation, Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Becky Herrin said.

Computers were stolen from Blue Water Weddings and Island Flash, while a projector and a screen were taken from Edward Jones.

Mark Freedman, 59, was arrested last Wednesday in Marathon. He's charged with a felony count of burglary and a misdemeanor count of property damage. He was in the Marathon jailhouse pending $75,000 bond late last week and couldn't be reached for comment.

Freedman is also on probation for a 2011 battery conviction.

Detectives got a break in the Freedman case on April 29, four days after they released photos captured from the Miss Monroe security camera of the March 24 burglar. The images showed a stocky middle-aged white man as he tried to steal the boutique's computer. The attempted theft was foiled by the machine's security wire.

The images were printed in local newspapers and the Sheriff's Office posted them on its Facebook page. The arrest of Freedman, though, came as a result of a tip from a man who was shown the security video by Miss Monroe owner Samuel Huddleston, Herrin said.

The computer allegedly targeted by Freedman at Miss Monroe, as well as the equipment that was taken in the three potentially-related burglaries, were all clearly visible from outside the stores.

The Sheriff's Office has urged Islamorada merchants to secure their businesses and locate computers inconspicuously.
