1 airlifted in 3-car crash

A Key West woman was airlifted to Miami Sunday evening after a three-car crash at Mile Marker 15 that slowed traffic both ways on U.S. 1 for about three hours.

The condition of Kathleen Garvey, 55, was unknown as of press time, but no fatalities had been reported as of Tuesday afternoon, said Florida Highway Patrol Lt. Kathleen McKinney.

Garvey was headed south in a 1998 Ford at 5:47 p.m. when she tried to pass a 1994 Toyota driven by Christobal Roca, 55, of Miami, in a no-passing zone, sideswiping it, according to a Florida Highway Patrol press release.

Roca's Toyota spun out of control and Garvey's Ford then struck, head-on, a northbound 2001 Toyota driven by Mark Jachelski, 19, of Summerland Key.

Garvey was airlifted to Ryder Trauma Center in Miami, where she remained as of Tuesday, McKinney said. A message left with a hospital spokeswoman for information on Garvey's condition was not returned by press deadlines.

Roca and a passenger in Jachelski's Toyota, Daniel Harper, 19, also of Summerland Key, were both taken to Lower Keys Medical Center on Stock Island, where they were treated and released, hospital spokesman Randy Detrick said.

Everyone involved in the crash -- including a juvenile passenger in Roca's vehicle -- were wearing seat belts, according to the FHP report.

Troopers are investigating whether alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash, reports say. No charges had been filed as of Tuesday.

All three cars were totaled.
