Man found floating a mile from bridge

The Monroe County Medical Examiner was working Monday to identify a man who was last seen alive by two people fishing from the Channel 2 Bridge early Sunday morning.

The two Miami residents reported trying to throw a rope to a man yelling for help at 4:30 a.m. as he floated under the Lower Matecumbe Key bridge from the oceanside to the bayside, but were unable to help him, said Monroe County Sheriff's Office Becky Herrin.

They lost sight of him and called 911.

Sheriff's Office, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and Coast Guard crews searched until a good Samaritan found the man later that morning about a mile east of the bridge, Herrin said.

The 56-year-old man had two drivers licenses -- one from North Carolina and the other from Vermont. He also had a checkbook with a name that matched both licenses, said Monroe County Medical Examiner E. Hunt Scheuerman.

His Chevrolet Tahoe was found parked near the bridge with Vermont tags, Herrin said.

There were no obvious signs of foul play, Herrin said.

"We don't know if the man was fishing or not as there really wasn't anything found on him to indicate what he was doing," Herrin said, adding that all that was found was the Tahoe.

The man didn't appear to have a boat or be in a boat either, Herrin said.

Scheuerman is waiting on a positive fingerprint identification to release the man's name, he said.

He explained Monday, he and other examiners, typically use fingerprint, DNA, dental and visual identification.

"Right now we have a good tentative identification, but we need the fingerprint match to make definitive identification," Scheuerman said.

Scheuerman said the autopsy has been completed, but he declined to discuss the results before the Sheriff's Office notified next of kin.
