Monroe seeks mainland shelter
County's agreement with FIU changed; new place for evacuees needed

The 2013 storm season is days away and Monroe County officials are looking for a permanent hurricane shelter on mainland Florida for Keys evacuees.

Monroe County had a legal agreement with Florida International University in Miami since July 13, 1992, that allowed Keys residents access in the event of a major hurricane, but that changed last year.
