Former Monroe County School District substitute teacher William Britt will face a maximum of 30 years in prison for possessing child pornography when he is sentenced next month.
Britt, 55, of Key West, agreed to the terms of the plea just before a trial was to be held on March 17, but the terms of the agreement were not immediately made public.
The plea agreement states Britt could face a maximum of 30 years in federal prison, fines up to $750,000 and be subject to state and federal sex offender registration requirements for the rest of his life when he is sentenced on June 26 before U.S. District Court Judge Jose E. Martinez in Miami.
Prosecutors have asked Martinez for leniency, saying Britt has assisted authorities in the investigation, records state.
He was arrested Nov. 8 when sheriff's deputies said they found him with a hard drive filled with images of children engaging in sexual acts and a sawed-off 20-gauge shotgun. He was arrested after a fake job interview at Glynn Archer Elementary School, where Britt had taught as a substitute teacher during the current school year.
Britt was charged with possessing child pornography and an unregistered shotgun. Since 2010, he had taught intermittently at public schools in Key West, Marathon and Sugarloaf Key. He had recently moved to Key West from Cudjoe Key, and lived in a trailer parked at the Key West Naval Air Station's Sigsbee Park housing area when arrested.
The pornographic images were described in federal court documents as those of naked children between the ages of 6 and 8 performing sexual acts.
