Dr. Donald W. "Don" Baker, formerly of Cudjoe Key, passed away on Thursday, May 9, 2013, in Boca Raton, Fla. He was born in Oak Park, Ill., on May 16, 1926, and enlisted in the Navy in 1944 to attend flight training school at the Great Lakes Naval Station.

As a Navy pilot, Don flew worldwide missions and served in the reserves until 1956. In civilian life, he graduated from Northwestern University and Loyola University Dental School and practiced dentistry for 30 years in St. Joseph, Mich. In 1985, Don and his wife, Helena, moved to Cudjoe Key, Fla., where they were greeters at the Key West Naval Station and he worked as a starter at the Key West Golf Club for 25 years. With a love of the open road, Don and Helena drove through every state in the continental U.S. and Alaska, most provinces of Canada, Mexico and 23 countries in Europe and western Asia. Don is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Helena; five children, Debbie of Menlo Park, Calif., Louisa of Boulder, Colo., Rebecca of Boca Raton, Todd of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Luke of Pittsfield, Mass.; brother, Dr. Peter Baker of Omro, Wis.; son-in-law, Paul LaChance; five grandchildren, Chris, Anessa, Charles, Sophia and Jack; and many nieces, nephews and friends. He had a kind heart, was loved by many and will be missed by all.
