Chart Room hosts chili cookoff benefit

The legendary Chart Room bar, inside the Pier House Resort, will celebrate its 45th anniversary with a Father's Day chili cookoff to raise money for Visiting Nurses Association/Hospice of the Florida Keys.

The event will take place from 5-8 p.m. June 16. All are invited to compete with their best chili recipe, or judge the recipes with $5 votes.

Commemorative T-shirts will be on sale for $20 and tons of donated prizes will be raffled off during the event.

Despite new ownership and management of the Pier House Resort, The Chart Room remains open from 4 p.m. to 4 a.m. nightly.

Anyone wishing to compete in the chili cookoff is encouraged to show up at the event with enough chili to share with all hungry judges.

Bank launches online storm center

As a community service, First State Bank of the Florida Keys recently re-launched its "Hurricane Center" at KeysBank.com to coincide with the start of hurricane season.

The seasonal web page features a real-time storm weather tracker, hurricane preparedness tips, a financial checklist, local shelter locations, pet friendly shelters, and related emergency resources, as well as customer information and bank status updates following a storm, according to a bank press release.

"All of us at First State Bank realize the importance of early preparation and planning for hurricane season and it is our pleasure to provide resources to help ensure a safe and less stressful hurricane season," said spokeswoman Angie Walterson.
