Shop features deli, self-serve yogurt and jewelry

KEY LARGO -- An all-in-one Cuban deli, self-serve yogurt shop and jewelry store has opened at Mile Marker 103, oceanside.

"It's like have your cake and eat it, too," said Joe Martinez, owner of the newly-opened Kokomo Joe's.

Last summer Martinez was injured while renovating the building for his new venture. That injury set him back almost a year, but now, he says, the business is up and running.

"It's going to be large portions," he said of the deli menu, which includes Cuban sandwiches and Chicago-style cheesesteaks.

As far as yogurt and custard goes, he said those products will be sold by the ounce and patrons will have a choice of 100 toppings.

The yogurt and deli area is separated by French doors to a jewelry store that showcases an array of items from the newest Gothic-style bracelets to antique-style globes. Initial research, he explains, shows about 12 to 15 percent of people who stop at the store will buy something in the gift shop.

"I am used to dealing in volume," he said, noting why he can offer up to 90 percent discounts on jewelry shop items.

Martinez's opening also comes weeks after his daughter graduated from college. She is helping him with the business.

"It's a family-type venture," he said.

Martinez said he expects much of his deli sales to be take-out and hopes to eventually provide delivery service.

As far as candy goes, Martinez says he will also be selling gourmet Russian and Belgian chocolate by the pound.

Martinez's goal for his shop is to eventually start attracting franchisees who wish to run their own Kokomo Joe's.

Shop hours are 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. For more information, call 305-741-7495.
