KEY LARGO -- State officials will meet next week with the public to review management plans for Dagny Johnson Key Largo Hammock Botanical State Park and John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park.
That meeting, to be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 25, at the Murray Nelson Government and Cultural Center, is the beginning of a series of meetings state park officials will conduct as part of their once-a-decade park plan reviews.
At the meeting, the public will have the opportunity to propose any changes they want to see made to the parks.
Steve Troeger, a Key Largo bike shop owner, is expected to make a presentation urging the opening of backcountry bike trails inside Dagny Johnson park. Environmentalists, along with state Rep. Holly Raschein, R-Key Largo, say the trails could harm the park's ecosystem. Biking enthusiasts dispute that claim and say the trails will have a positive economic impact on the area.
