Mayor honored for municipal advocacy

ISLAMORADA -- The Florida League of Cities has honored village Mayor Ken Philipson as one of 22 recipients this year of its "Home Rule Hero Award."

The organization presents the award after the legislative session each year to municipal officials, elected and administrative, who have advocated strongly for home rule rights of cities.

"Mayor Philipson's advocacy for municipal home rule during the 2013 Legislative Session and throughout the year is an inspiration and model for municipal officials statewide," Florida League Legislative Director C. Scott Dudley said in a prepared statement.

Philipson said that over the course of the past year he took eight trips either to lobby in Tallahassee or for Florida League functions in Orlando and Tampa. He sits on the league's growth management committee, which helps develop the organization's legislative agenda for land-use matters.

Philipson said he believes the lobbying work of the league and municipal officials such as himself are key to protecting the interests of cities like Islamorada against more powerful players.

"If we weren't controlling this, the state and federal government would be dictating unfunded mandates," he said.

The Florida League informed Philipson about his award on June 13.
