Nonprofit and leader up for award

The Wounded Warrior Project named the Dolphin Research Center (DRC) and its director of special needs, Joan Mehew, finalists in the 2013 Carry Forward Awards.

Mehew organizes programs with Wounded Warrior, including the annual Soldier Ride, Project Odyssey and Caregivers retreats. The public can vote daily for their choice of winners at through July 31.

The public votes count as a percentage of the final judging process. After July 31, a panel of judges will evaluate each finalist's contributions and determine award recipients. Founded in 1984, the nonprofit DRC is at Mile Marker 59 on Grassy Key. For more information, call 305-289-1121 or visit

City hosts free Summer Bash

Nothing says summer like a community party, says city and police spokeswoman Alyson Crean.

The Key West Police Department's Police Athletic League is teaming up with the State Attorney's Office and many other community partners to throw a Summer Bash from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday at Nelson English Park at the corner of Catherine and Thomas streets next to the community pool.

The free party will feature games, food, bounce houses, a basketball tournament and more. There will be pool activities, and an opportunity for parents to have their children officially identified with fingerprinting. Sysco, Pepsi and 5 Brothers are providing some of the refreshments.

"Come cool off and enjoy Key West at its best," Crean said.
