FWC: Woman arrested for 'out of season' lobster sales

MARATHON -- A 20-year-old Marathon woman was arrested Monday after selling 25 fresh lobster tails to undercover state wildlife officials in a parking lot, according to a Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission press release.

Kasey Marie Platt was charged with the unlicensed sale of saltwater products, possession/sale of lobster out of season, not possessing a saltwater products license, not possessing a retail dealer license and not possessing bills of lading and invoices pertaining to the transport of saltwater products. All are misdemeanors.

Jail records say Platt is a dental hygienist.

An anonymous tipster reported there was an advertisement on Craigslist.com about fresh lobster tails on sale for $10 each, reports say.

Officers contacted the person who had posted the ad and agreed to buy 25 tails for $250 after the person stated the tails had been frozen for only three days, reports say. That led officers to believe the tails were taken during the recent two-day mini-season.

They agreed to meet at a parking lot that afternoon.

An undercover officer made the purchase, at which point Platt was arrested.

The money was recovered.

Regular lobster season does not start until Aug. 6. It is illegal in Florida to sell seafood without a saltwater products license.
